Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I agree that you need to research the areas and decide what works best for you.
I will say I am biased as I grew up in Seaford, and now I live in N. Bellmore, so I am a south shore girl, for sure!
There are some truly beautiful areas on the north shore, and gorgeous homes -- but I will say that I think the south shore is more convenient, in terms of proximity to highways and shopping and restaurants. If you commute, the Babylon train line (which includes Seaford, Bellmore, and Merrick -- and Wantagh, which is in between Bellmore and Seaford, and you may consider) is great! Trains run really frequently, tons of express trains during peak hours, and you rarely change at Jamaica. The express train is 39 mins to Penn Station from Merrick, 43 from Bellmore.
I also think you get more for your money on the south shore v. north shore (in NASSAU -- Suffolk is a different story).
If you have specific questions, or need help with a house hunt, please let me know. My office is based in N. Bellmore, and I do the majority of my work in the area (Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford), plus I live in the area and grew up here. I am happy to help!

I'm a Queens gal also. I would move back in a heartbeat We are in South Shore Nassau and honestly it just comes down to your preference. When I lived in Queens, I was more in the middle and had many highways near me. Now I feel as if I only have the SSP/Belt and I hate that. I like choices. There are many great towns on both sides.

I am from Queens (Whitestone too ) also. In a perfect world I would love to stay here (we also own a 2 bdrm coop).
I love Floral Park bc it is close to Queens, easy to get to NYC (DH commutes), but the homes are cheaper than the area of Queens we live in. Merrick is also really nice but iMO seems far from Queens...I mean I know it is not THAT far but to me it seems that way.
I could have written that!! I've been dying to move to FP, particularly the villlage but DH is not sold. He wants suffolk... I want whitestone so to compromise, we're going to nassau lol DH wants no part of queens anymore. I can really work from any location on LI and he already works in melville. I also love Merrick but I just feell like its soooo far
I also could have written this word for word. Grew up in Whitestone, DH is from Bayside. You just cant get enough for your $ in these neighborhoods anymore. If we could have afforded to stay or move somewhere close on the northshore -- little neck, douglaston, great neck, etc, we would have. We wound up moving to Floral Park. Honestly i dont really consider it south shore bc it is in between. we love it and it def has a whitestone 20 years ago vibe. Lots of luck to you!

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
My DH and I looked for over 3 years - NO joke. He grew up in Brentwood and I grew up in Williston Park. We were all over the island- we looked at Hauppauge, Merrick,Massapequa, East Norwich, Albertson, Port Washington and finally selected Glen Head. We love it here.
Ask anyone where they live and chances are they say they "love "it! As the should! Same thing about school districts- EVErYONE says that their school district is "the best", I have not yet heard anyone say the they live in a crappy school district. YOU have decide what YOU want and Where, so you can say that you "love "it!!!!!!!!!

And this is exactly the feeling I get! lol We can afford either. Thankfully we have been saving for a very long time for the "right" house/neighborhood. DH wants north shore and I keep saying that Im worried it will put a lot of pressure on our kids to "keep up". Financially we are prepared but thats not the point at all.
I guess I cant really go wrong with one or the other.
Thanks for all the fabulous input!! I will defintely try to spend some time in each neighborhood at different times during the day/week to get a feel for it.

Merrick is definitely not too far. I live 5 blocks from the SS. my BF lives in Queens Village and is 10 minutes away. When I see my in laws in Whitestone we're 20 minutes away. I can get to my friends in bay ridge in 30-40 minutes.
Most of my family is in bayside/whitestone... many of my friends are in whitestone as well so being close is so important to me. We looked at a few houses in Merrick and I think it's such an adorable town!! I just need to put on my big girl pants and move!

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I am a North Shore girl. I love the NS because it is quieter and to me, more beautiful. I will say that the South Shore is more convienent in terms of highways and stores, but I find it VERY crowded. If you have the money, I would move to the best school district and town you can comfortably afford. Good luck.

I grew up in Merrick and my husband grew up in Muttontown (syosset schools) >
We both live in Merrick now and love it. Its cheaper than Syosset for one. But honestly my dh felt Syosset was rather snooty with lots of wealthier people. We could have never kept up with that. Many of the kids there get a Mercedes when they get there license...in Merrick you get what you can afford and its not a Mercedes.
We love it here though. The neighbors are great (except one) and we do not plan on moving until the kids are grown. My neighbor is also from Syosset.

LOL that depends what part of Merrick you're in! South Merrick is most certainly like that...maybe not AS bad, but similar.

I'm a graduate of the Merrick School system and I can tell you that if you go to Kennedy it was exactly that unless it's changed alot since 1987. Everyone had way better cars that any teacher in that school, the jeans, the bags, etc. Maybe it's not the same anymore but I doubt it.
Many of my friends that grew up with me in Merrick moved back to raise their families.
PS I'm in Great Neck and it's the same thing.

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I grew up in SI, and my DH grew up in Wantagh. We now live just on the border of Bellmore and North Bellmore, in the N. Bellmore school district, and I love it. It's convenient to get anywhere, and I always say that I live within 20 minutes max of almost anything I could want, and much closer to most things.
I think the north shore is gorgeous, and would be a beautiful place to live, if we could afford it. However, I am happy to be in the N. Bellmore school district for the reason that others have said. On the north shore or in S. Bellmore/Merrick, there'd be too much "keeping up with the Jones" for us. We are a solid middle class couple with both of us working, so we picked where we felt we would be with the most people in a similar situation to us.

Thats how my DH describes growing up in Seaford!!! And when I moved there from BRENTWOOD i had to agree.

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I grew up in Jericho and graduated HS there.
The school district is amazing. However, there was a lot of competition among residents to show and proove how wealthy they were. The competition didn't faze me.
I live in a similar community in NJ now so I am going to expose my kids to the same type of environment.
fm me with any questions you have about Jericho

I just want to point out that there are PLENTY of North Shore towns (esp Suffolk NS) that are not loaded with keeping up with the Joneses types.
