North shore vs south shore
DH and I live on the south shore, in Nassau. For a variety of reasons, we do not want to remain here long term.
We have been house hunting on and off, not on LI. Our desired areas are very expensive and the houses are minuscule. We would get more for our money on LI. It is an incredibly hard sell for us and I don’t know if DH would ever truly come around to it. However, I work on LI, houses are larger for the price, taxes are lower and there is more inventory.
If you have lived on or are very familiar with both shores, what do you find are the biggest differences? If you have a strong preference, why? We would be looking in the Plainview/Old Bethpage area specifically.

North shore vs south shore
I consider Plainview center of the island. It's literally almost dead in the center. I don't consider it North Shore of Nassau.
To me the North Shore and South Shore just have different vibes and are spatially different. NS is hilly, more space, less congestion. South Shore is flat and beachy. It definitely depends on the town you are in though.

I work in Plainview and I mean this is a very nice way... plainview is a cluster fluck.... I HATE loathe and dispise it! I mean houses are nice. It’s very close to parkways but it’s dead center, no close beaches. I frequently go to eat in plainview and everyone is rude. Expect family bagel- they are great and know everyone in plainview! Overall, I hate plainview and I don’t even live here... that’s just my experience! But schools are good!

Haha, no, this is what I need to hear. No one ever tells you their real opinions.
And good point to you and PP, it is dead center. I think of anything above where I am as north, which is obviously incorrect

Re: North shore vs south shore
Keep in mind too that a lot of the North Shore is no where near the parkway / LIE. That's what DH and I discovered as we were looking for houses.

North Shore. I don't want to get into details, it's just where I prefer.

Re: North shore vs south shore
North Shore and South Shore are SO different, but Plainview is mid-island and IMO, more similar to south shore, like a Merrick.
There are SO many towns on both shores, though, that have different feels. North Shore feels more secluded and for the most part, it is. You have to drive to get to the mall or a Target and if you really go north, like Glen Cove or Oyster Bay, you have to drive a solid 15 minutes to get to a parkway. The same can be said for some places on the south shore, too, like Long Beach or Oceanside, though.
Plainview/OB is more centrally located. We house hunted on and off there, but wound up buying on the south shore. I have family in the POB area, so I was always there a lot growing up. I do really like the area a lot, but we just didn't end up there. Any specific questions, just let me know.

I prefer the South Shore to the North Shore. It's just a completely different vibe. We're in Massapequa and I love our proximity to everything. I can walk into town if I needed to to buy groceries, I'm within walking distance to the LIRR (which the Babylon lines is one of the better ones,) and the school district is good too.

Re: North shore vs south shore
I live in Plainview, the schools are awesome, we move here when my son was going into 4th grade and he is now graduating high school. The reason for the move to Plainview was because of the schools. The high school is great and during the college process when visiting colleges the advisors always mentioned how Plainview was considered one of the top high schools in Nassau.
Yes it is very close to the parkways which is what I like and its really only 20 minutes to Jones Beach.
You will always find rude people no matter where you go and I have never came across that many rude people in Plainview.
HTH Good Luck with your search.

This is pretty hilarious because my brother in law works in Jericho/Plainview border and he says the same thing all the time!! Every time he goes out to get lunch he says everyone is a major dbag LOL.
This is just what he says - I am not familiar with the area so I cant say lol.

North Shore is very pretty- people aren't as nice IMO. South Shore is more laid back but smaller lots.

LOl, nothing really dramatic. I just prefer the north shore vibe. I find people friendlier for one, less congested or as less as you can be on this parking lot called long island! I think it is prettier and I like the rocky beaches. As someone else said, if you grew up on North Shore you will prefer that and if you grew up on South Shore you will like that better. But to the OP, I don't consider Plainview or Bethpage either, I feel they are pretty center island, at least Plainview is.

I grew up not far from there and I can concur. When I moved out here I was amazed at how much nicer everyone was. LOL

He’s being serious when I say it’s bad. For example: I went to DD to get coffee one morning, long line, around 7:30ish, everyone has to go to work. Line wasn’t moving too quick, the guy behind me actually said to me he was in a hurry and needed to get in front of me. I gave him a jaw dropping stare and told him we all have some place to be if we are up and out at 7:30 in the morning and proceeded to keep my place in line. Then, the plainview shoprite... there are no words. At least they moved so the parking is better but I feared my safety in that place because people driving in that lot and then in the store were OFF THE WALL... And forget about driving and moving around in general..... I just have never seen anything like plainview during high traffic times. Jericho is pretty bad during lunch hour too, and the people are rude AF. Again, rude people everywhere, I’ve just never seen anything like this. And the Syosset homegoods, I have PTSD from waiting on that line on a random Tuesday. I cannot ever go back there....

North shore vs south shore
I live on the north shore and LOVE it, always have always will. I feel like where I am is pretty Far East but close to places I go often, I love that it may feel a little less crowded in some of the places you go... but it depends because some places you can’t even drive through depending on the time of year. I in general love where I am and few everyone around me is very nice, minus my one neighbor that thinks it’s the 4th of July every night and sets off fireworks even in the snow. I wear every time this guy changes his underwear he thinks “let me go light a few fireworks off to celebrate!”

i like the south shore better because I like being closer to the beach vs the sound
I also don't live in either of the two areas, so my opinion is truly just what I would pick.. I live pretty much in the center. I'm in western nassau- 20 mins to manhasset, and 20 mins to jones beach

Re: North shore vs south shore
House hunted in both areas for a long time. Both areas very different. Main difference IMO is the size of the property for the price, the terrain (hilly and treed NS vs flat SS) and congestion. It is so much more congested in Nassau, esp SS compared to NS. We chose NS, SS was not for us at all after house hunting both areas.

Thanks guys. I suppose we could spend more time in the area to get a feel for the vibe. We should have done that before we bought our house the first time because if we had we wouldn't be living here.

Hahaha, I have one of those, too. Sometimes I see him unloading them from his truck that is decorated with confederate flags while he drinks a beer and screams profanities at his girlfriend. He looks like exactly the type of person who should be handling explosives.

His brother must life on my block. That’s exactly this guy... with tons of cameras all over his house, flags in his window and off the back of the oldest pick up ever....
