Anyone been on Norwegian Cruise Line? I've cruised on Costa cruises before but never NCL.

Is it nice????

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

I've been on both Norwegian and Celebrity.

I think that the variety of food is better on NCL but the quality of the food is better on X.
The rooms were about the same.
The public spaces were about the same.
The service was better on X.
I think they cater to a younger client than X.

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

I was on an NCL cruise in February and it was pretty good, but the food was kinda gross. We didn't want to pay extra for the specialty restaurants and stuck with the main dining room and were a little more disappointed each day.

Other than that, it was a fun time!

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

I prefer RCCL.
We went on the NCL DAWN 2 years ago and I felt the lay out was horrible, was always getting lost and there was just not enough food. I like to have a small snack about 3pm and then something later on at night. At 3pm their "snacks" were coldcuts and hero bread, too heavy for me when I would be having dinner 3 hours later. There was one place open at night so it was always packed and only 1-2 waitresses.

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

Also can you book excursions from the boat or do they all have to be done prior to boarding the cruise?

You can actually book your excursions from home with NCL...and if you book the specialty restaurants, I recommend Teppanyaki, Cagney's and Bamboo!

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

I like NCL. I think the food is fine. and I don't think there ever is a problem with not enough. I think I always gain a few pounds when I am on it. We go to a few specialty restaurants, we've been to French rest ( good) Cagneys ( alittle overpriced) Tepanaki ( liked it). We have splurged and gotten the family suite, which I highly suggest. It has a separate small bedroom for the kids and you have access to a private indoor/outdoor pool ( it has a removable roof) which also has refreshments/hors doveures all day. They also bring hors doevures to the room each afternoon and fresh fruit. You can order room service 24/7. I have booked excursions through the ship and outside of NCL. I have found if there is just a few of you, just book through the ship. When we went to Europe for a cruise, we had 8 in our party, I setup a private tour, it was cheaper than NCL and worked out great, could go wherever/whenever you want. Where r u planning on going? We have a cruise booked out of NY in december going to the bahamas.

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

I went on my first cruise in Feb and it was NCL...I loved it!

I thought the food was great, and this is coming from someone who loves to cook, has a picky DH, and who for the most part eats low carb/ gluten free. I NEVER had a problem finding something to eat!

We were on the Sky, and we ate at Cagneys and the Italian place and thought they were both outstanding

We immediately booked our next cruise for November on NCL as well Chat Icon

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

Wondered if the posters who said there was enough food did room service or when and where they "snacked" in between meals.

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

Ive been on Norwegian, RCC and Carnival. Out of those three i prefer RCC but Norwegian is very close in comparison. I enjoyed the freestyle cruising the most in NCL but RCC has bigger and nicer boats with A LOT more things to do... its all a matter of preference. I can tell you however that NCL has a great medical center! Needed stitches on board and they were really good to me... (i even got a free cruise out of them since they were somewhat at fault)

Nope, didn't do room service...

there was the bar that had popcorn and hot pretzels...and in the afternoon to late evening had a pub like menu (wings, chicken fingers, etc), the buffet always had stuff out to snack on such as rolls, fruit, cold cuts, salads, etc...On sea days they had bbqs by the pool and there was an ice cream machine in the afternoon- and probably so much more we didn't even know about!

Oh, ok. We had the kids so we didn't go to the bars. At 3pm they did have on the Dawn coldcuts, heros, salads but that was too heavy for me as again with the kids we ate around 6pm and I did not want that heavy of food at 3pm.
On RCCL they have a buffet of "snack" food around 3pm that I liked better as I wanted more than just the small ice cream cones by the pool. Also on RCCL they have the Promenade where they have snacks like small croissants, cookies, fruit, etc 24 hours a day. You can get tea, coffee, milk 24 hours a day also. On NCL I couldn't get tea, milk or hot chocolate after a certain time as they shut everything down.

Re: Norwegian Cruise Line ????

we are book on the one leaving Dec 18th. I actually like their freestyle approach. You can eat whenwherever you like, you don't have to be locked into a particular time. Good Luck! you can visit cruise critic message boards, those are really great as well for answering questions. Have Fun!

I would next time, BUT I'd also factor the extra $$ into the cost when I was comparing across cruiselines.

I agree with PPs about Freestyle cruising, that was a big selling point for us, we had no desire to eat dinner with strangers...
