Not giving out candy this year
My question is, how will you parents know who’s participating in Halloween and who isn’t? When I was a kid, my mom went by Halloween decorations. If there weren’t any, don’t go to their door. Simple enough. So this year (as much as it kills me not to turn my house into a haunted house) we only have fall stuff out. Mums and some non-carved pumpkins, hay, etc.
Will that Type of decorations be Inviting for TOTers? I won’t be home until about 5 anyway but assume there will be plenty of kids out. I know once I’m home, I can just not answer the door but was just curious as to what you are doing with your kids going door to door. Plus if I could avoid the knocking so my dogs don’t lose their ish every 5 minutes, that would be great too. Thanks

Re: Not giving out candy this year
To be honest we don't look at decorations. We just ring the bell. If nobody answers we move on. I don't decorate for Fall or Haloween at all and tons of kids ring my bell every year so I don't think the decorations or lack there of really matter .
Eta...if you want to avoid knocking I would say that when you get home at 5, maybe put a bowl of candy out. This way they will take it and move on and not knock

Re: Not giving out candy this year
Just put a sign on the door. I’ve seen it plenty of times way before Covid.

Same as ur mom. If we don’t see any Halloween decorations, we don’t knock on that door.
If u don’t want anyone coming to ur door, maybe u can leave a note so nobody rings the bell?

Our kids ring the bell, decorations or not. There has been some houses with a sign on the door saying they are not home and we just leave to the next house.

Re: Not giving out candy this year
My issue with leaving a note is 1. I don’t want to leave one saying we aren’t home, It’s like an invite to Rob the house (i really won’t be home during a bulk of the day) And 2. To leave one saying we aren’t participating in Halloween, makes me wonder if the asshole teens in my area will take that as a “let’s egg the house” lol
Yes. These are the things I think of.
ETA: I would leave candy out with little social distance X’s for families to not be on top of each other but those same asshole teens come and rob the candy - bowl and all.

I would just leave a sign out. We never pay attention to decor.

We don't pay attention to decor but, maybe leave out a bowl of candy anyway - that way you are participating but, not interacting.

We only go to houses with decorations (I thought that was pretty standard but I guess not?) I think if you nix any and all decorations and keep the lights off you're probably fairly safe. Or just don't answer the door.

I think you’re majorly overthinking it.
I don’t think anybody is going to egg or rob your house if you have a note that says no candy.

Not a sign that says you aren’t home but a sign that says “No candy this year” or even “no more candy” if you are worried about egging. I’ve even seen signs that added a note to please not to ring the bell for anxious pets.
Also won’t teens still come back and egg your house if they ring your bell and you don’t answer? It’s still an indication that you aren’t participating. I hope not but kids can be little jerks lol.

Do kids even do this anymore?? I was young in the height of the shaving cream/egg scene, but as an adult I never see any evidence of either the next day.

Turn off the porch lights
That’s my plan At night But being it’s on a. Saturday, I’m guessing it’ll be an earlier event.
I’ll put a no candy sign when I get home from work. Thanks for the advice.

I was about a pre-teen during the end of the egg/shaving cream era. But no I haven’t seen this really as an adult. But assumed it was still happening in some areas since the poster mentioned it.

Re: Not giving out candy this year
Go to the dollar store and get one or 2 candy bowls. Either put one out with candy or with no candy so people think someone already took all the candy
Decor would really mean nothing. We just knock if they they answer if they don’t they don’t we move on to the next house.

Not giving out candy this year
I ordered a lawn sign so parents knew we were giving candy this year. I know of a few who ordered ones saying they weren't participating. That way kids don't waste their time walking up to the door.
I would never depend on decorations because I always have candy to give out but more likely than not I don't decorate.

Re: Not giving out candy this year
We put out a bowl bc we go out trick or treating. I make a sign that says "please take one" or something cute in Halloween theme. Do i think they take more than 1? Of course, but it's a sign that says don't ring the doorbell and take from the bowl.
We've always gone to all homes decorated or not. If you take too long to answer the door we are onto the next house.

Where my sister used to live they would take her bowl and her pumpkins. Nothing was safe.
