NOt so happy update on my Dad's dog
If you would have asked me last week, he was doing so well and my parents were (well still are) very happy with their trainer.
Well yesterday somehting terrible happened and my Mom just called me hysterical crying. My Dad was outside training Buddy on his leash and a neighbor was talking to my Dad from 3 feet away when suddenyly and completely unrpovoked Buddy lunged at him and bit the mans hand and would not let go. My Dad took the neighor to the hospital and he needed stitches and can not return to work for 3-4 weeks while it heals. The hospital had to report it to Board Of Health.
My parents are devestated, they feel like they no longer have a choice to continue to try and train this dog and are also very worried about both their neighbor, but also what they were afraid of in the beginning losing their home because Buddy bites someone.
They are feeling so guilty because like with any accident they are thinking about all the different ways the situation could have played out, my Mom had asked my dad to take him out for a walk etc.
Please no flames.... this is a really sad situation that I hope no one ever has to go through.
Please pray for Buddy and pray that my parents have the strength to get through this. I am so worried about my Dad. I dont know if he can emotionally handle this. Losing a pet is hard enough but being told that you have to do it..... I just cant imagine

No flames here..... You're parents did everything they possibly could with that dog.
I'm hoping that the neighbor is an honest person with a good heart who doesn't try to take advantage of the situation....

Re: NOt so happy update on my Dad's dog
Such a hard horrible situation. I feel bad for your parents.
I think they did all they could. NO one will flame you....
But is there as an alternative, any place to take him, like a ranch of some sort? Anything? Or is he violent with other dogs too?
Once it comes to the safety of other people and this is an ongoing thing, I dont think they have much of a choice. Which is awful, but the Dog might not be having the best life either if he is in his head agressive, he might be "off" .

nope he is aggressive with other dogs too. I am starting to really get mad at the people my parents rescued this dog from. They had to know

Your parents are doing everything they can to try & helkp the dog, and I think that they have taken on a huge responsibility in trying.
If the dog is violent against other dogs as well maybe a professional needs to be consulted about some more intense training, and if they think it will help.
I hope everyone is OK.

Amy I agree with you a lot, but not this time. How would he be taking advantage of it? The dog is a known danger to the owners and he bit someone while leashed(which should be, to a dog, a control situation) I do not think a dog should be put above a human, ever. Also her parents are at risk from this dog.

Re: NOt so happy update on my Dad's dog
Maybe I should clarify- what I meant was that hopefully this neighbor is honest and just expects to be paid for medical bills and time away from work (3 weeks-mentioned in the OP).
The OP mentioned her parents were afraid of losing their house- something that would occur if the neighbor decided to go for *millions* of dollars. Judging by the litigious society we've become, that could be a very real outcome, considering the circumstances...
I agree the dog likely needs to be put down as I don't know of any responsible rescue that would take in an animal that's had the time put into it the OP's parents have, and still exhibits such aggressiveness....

you are exactly right, these neighbors are my parents friends so I hope and pray that they would not be litigious, I dont think that means anyone is putting the animal first. My parents have offered to cover all medical expenses and to help out however they can while he is out of work.
Distraught as they are, they have decided to put the dog down and are incredibly upset and guilty about this.
Thanks everyone for your support.

thanks, I dont know why this is so hard for me. I feel so bad for this dog, I wish there were something we could do and I will really miss him. ITs silly cause I hardly see him. I love my Dad so much too and I know how much this is killing him so that just intensifies the hurt I am feeling.
I am also so worried about how to tell DS, he LOVES that dog!! And I know how much everytime he asks for him is going to hurt my parents.

I cannot even imagine what you all are going through and how hard this will be for you. I hope that your parents will open their hearts up to another dog that is better suited for them so they can share the love they obviously have with a dog that is better suited to their lifestyle. My sincere sympathies to all of you
