Not sure where to ask this
I hope you don't mind me asking this. Feel free to ignore the post if you'd like.
I was wondering at what point in time you decided to seek assistance from a specialist. After unsuccessful TTC or recurrent miscarriages? Secondary infertility?
Are there even specialists for recurrent miscarriages? I am at a total loss.
Thank you

Re: Not sure where to ask this
If you have a miscarriage, especially recurrent ones, i think you need to see RE ASAP. Yes, there are doctors who specialize in recurrent miscarriages and run thrombo and immune issues panels.
One of such REs is dr. Braverman, who is highly praised on this board.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I was 30 at the time and had been TTC unsuccessfully for 12 months and decided to seek out a specialist. I had never been pregnant. I think if I had repeat miscarriages, I would seek out help sooner.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I decided it was time not too long ago.
We started trying Nov 09... got pregnant on the first try... only to have a mc at 11 weeks. we had trisomy 21 which probably wasn't the cause of the mc, just an unfortuante factor in the pregnancy.
then we were trying from March on with nothing to show for it. Every month was just another disappointment. I was using CBEFM, opks, preseed, pillow under the asss, you name it. And nothing was working.
My skin was breaking out like crazy since the MC so there was always a change my hormones were just off... and I decided that I needed the security of knowng things were OK and if not then we were on the path to fixing them.... the start to that was getting tested. That's really how I decided to go to an RE.
If you think it's time, then don't hold off.. I say go for it!! the longer you wait the more time you are being robbed of.
I ended up going for a consult with Dr Braverman... and then got pregnant naturally that cycle. I think just seeing him gave me the luck I needed. But since I had that consult with him... I'm his patient until I graduate.. and I couldn't be happier under his care.
Good Luck!!

Re: Not sure where to ask this
We only waited 3 months before seeing my OBGYN and going on clomid. But I knew I had PCOS and temped and charted during that 3 months and knew I wasn't Oing on my own. We tried clomid and timed intercourse for 3 cycles. When that was unsuccessful we moved onto an RE.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I don't think it can ever hurt to see an RE if you have insurance coverage especially if it will give you some sense of security that you are doing everything you can.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I was trying for about 6 months when I saw my OB/Gyn for my annual exam. At that appointment he decided to send me for testing. I wasted a few months undergoing treatments with him and moved on to an RE about a year into TTC.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
Thank you to those of you that have shared by post or FM. I appreciate it.
I spoke to my doctor this evening since this is my 2nd miscarriage. He claims that I don't need to see a specialist yet since I already have a child. He said had I not had any children then he would be worried. For some reason, that doesn't sit well with me since both of the m/cs took place after I had my first child. I know my girlfriend struggles with secondary infertility so that's always in the back of my mind.
I am going to wait and see what Thursday holds for me and then make a decision. I really appreciate all of your information and support- I already took down Braverman's number as well
Thanks again.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
i posted this on your post on pregnancy but i wanted to make sure you saw it so i copied and pasted it here too:
first off,
second, you absolutely 100% need to see an RE that specializes in recurrent m/c. this is extremely important if you already have a known clotting disorder. just because you have a DC already DOES NOT disqualify you from the recurrent m/c d/x!! even the m/c panel is not going to tell you enough to prevent a m/c in the future.
you need to see an RE that will run both immune and thrombo testing. that way you can treat these issues prior to ovulation/conception as well as early in pregnancy. most issues are treatable and you will go on to have a healthy pregnancy. but without having the adequate testing done, you won't know how/what issues to treat. please don't listen to any doctor that tells you that you haven't yet suffered enough to go through with the testing. not all ob/gyns or even REs believe in immune and thrombo causes of early m/c, even though there is PLENTY of research on it. i highly recommend the Dr. Braverman, since he specializes in recurrent m/c (you can read a lot more about this on his website ) and has some of the most specialized testing out there for recurrent miscarriage.
anyway i wont make this any longer than it already is, you can FM me if you want more info. again, so sorry you have to go through this!!

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I think you should definitely see an RE. He/she will not laugh at you. Once you've had a m/c, it's definitely worth it to see a specialist and you've had more than one. It's wonderful that you have a DC, but who knows what's happened between then and now. There's no harm in beginning the process, especially b/c it can be a long one. You may want to do some research, check out what's covered on your insurance, etc. This all takes time and then you can't always get an appt immediately. If anything, the RE's and their staff are WAY more supportive (I find) of the whole infertility - m/c roller coaster. FYI- I saw my endocrinologist (regular f/up for thyroid disease) after 5-6 months of trying. She told me to take a vacation and everything would be fine (thanks). Then I saw my OB-GYN after another 3 months or so (annual exam). She looked at my bloods, did an exam, and asked how often we were trying. When she didn't see an explanation, she referred me to an RE. We decided to start with SA because we knew my husband was at risk b/c of meds he took as a kid. Turns out he has ZERO sperm. Unfortunately, taking a vacation doesn't help with that, so I'll NEVER go back to that endocrinologist. I'm sure she meant well, but sometimes people just say the wrong thing at the wrong time and you can't look at them again... By the time we got my husband checked out, saw a urologist, got him tested for everything under the sun, it was another 2 months later before we consulted with our RE. My first IUI with DS ended up being about 11 months after we started trying. I hope that's helpful!

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I decided to start seeing a RE after my second early miscarriage/chemical pregnancy this past July. We had been trying since March 2009, and I had my first m/c in June 2009. I have long cycles, so I didn't have as many chances to get PG as someone with a typical cycle. I consulted with my ob-gyn on 4/30/10 (my bday) after not getting PG again. She gave me prescriptions for an HSG and CD 3 bloodwork. The next month, I was away CD 3 and couldn't go for the tests, and the following cycle, I had my second BFP, which resulted in a chemical. After that was over, I made an appointment with Dr. Braverman, despite my ob-gyn telling me to wait. He specializes in immunologial issues (which I don't have) and recurrent losses.
Always feel free to ask any questions on here.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I agree with everyone here. You should not be deterred from seeing an RE.
There is such a thing as "secondary infertility" - infertility that occurs after you've already had a child. It's not too uncommon; your doc has definitely heard of it and I find it odd that he told you that you can't have a fertility problem if you've already given birth to a child.
There are some women here who are suffering from secondary infertility. They can probably help you more than I can.
Good luck.

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I waited too long - a year and a half of TTC with no success. Then spent another 7 months trying with the wrong doctor..... choosing the right RE is extremely important so make sure you do your homework before going down this road. Check out this website SART. You can find a list of all clinics here along with their statistics.
Good Luck!

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I knew since high school that I was going to have issues. I was told even back then that I had PCOS. So, when the time came to go off the pill, I gave myself 2 1/2 months or so and never got my period or ovulated. My OB at the time was very dismissive so I just went directly to an RE since I didn't want to waste any time. It was the BEST decision I made.
It ultimately took 3 IUI cycles to get pregnant but then I lost the baby and just had my first failed IUI cycle back in the game. Onto round 2.....
Good luck!!

Re: Not sure where to ask this
I spoke with a coworker today who suggested Dr. San Roman (?). Does anyone know if he would be an option? Does he specialize in recurrent m/c or another area? I tried to find his info online but I'm thinking I am spelling it incorrectly because I'm coming up empty handed. Plus I figured I'd ask here and get first hand experiences and advice from those that have BTDT.
Thanks again. I really don't think any of you understand how grateful I am for your help

I don't know anything about that dr other than having seen his name posted on the boards at random- but what I can tell you is Dr.Braverman specializes in recurrent m/c and he is really a phenomenal doctor. His office is located in Woodbury.

Dr. San Roman is a DR at RS of NY in Stony Brook. I had a consultation with him. To be honest, I liked him alot. But the day before I was about to start a cycle with them......I felt I wasnt ready to do it just yet. I ended up taking ahuge break. I never went back to him and ended up making a consult w/ Dr. B and just ended up sticking with him only for the sole purpose of him finding out issues that most doctors cant. To be honest......Dr. San Roman is very highly spoken of. Give him a shot. Cant hurt. Should have given him a chance........but I just never did.
