Not sure where to post this... has anyone ever done a "tombstone rubbing"?
very strange question... I know.
I will be attempting to do this next week with my grandfather's headstone. I looked up instructions on how to do it. I just bought interfacing material and a box of extra large crayons.
if anyone has any tips for me, I would really like to hear them.
thanks

I had to do it when I was in junior high for a project.
It helps to have someone there with you to hold the paper while you rub with the crayon.

My friend lived down the road from a cemetary and did this for something.... I think she also used tracing paper and either black crayons or chalk.

It helps to have someone there with you to hold the paper while you rub with the crayon. I bought masking tape - they rec'd that or low tack tape so it won't leave any residue.

They actually say you shouldn't do that anymore - taking pics is recommended instead, because apparently the rubbings increase the rate of erosion of the stone. Good luck either way.

I used drawing paper (the one that is a step up from newsprint) and charcoals. I like them better than crayons or pastels.

I did that at Ellis Island.
I just used regular paper and a pencil and "shaded" over the name.
Worked like a charm.

I did it in the UK years ago. You can even stick a few charcoals in a ziploc baggie.
