I don't know but you would think so. Banks and libraries have notaries too.

Re: Notary Public
It is funny because I have an account with Bank of America - mainly because I do not want ATM fees and there is an BofA ATM two blocks from me.
So I called and asked and this is the reponse I got
"This is not what our bank does. If it is not banking business then we do not do it. The bank pays for the notary license and the bank does not want to assume liability for notarization."
When was the last time you heard anyone being sued for a bad notary?

actually...if they knowingly admiteed that there they are a notary....then by law they can not deny to notorize a document for you...as long as the document is written in a language that they can understand, you have proper ID...and they may charge you $2 for each signature that they notarize.
here is the actual law....
Notary must officiate on request. The Penal Law (§195.00) provides that an officer before whom an oath or affidavit may be taken is bound to administer the same when requested, and a refusal to do so is a misdemeanor. (People v. Brooks, 1 Den. 457.)

That's crap. I use Commerce for notary services and coin redemption and I do not have an account. Is there a Commerce around?
Liability..what does that mean? The liability risk is very small and that person you spoke to needs an enema!
Had to edit..I re-read your previous post.

There was a case ages ago about a mom/son scam team that bilked an elderly woman out of her assets - which included a building in NY. Sante Kinne was the name I think. Anyway one notary refused to notarize the elderly woman's signature on the real estate documents because she didn't seem competent. They brought another notary to do it. Then they murdered the old woman. That notary is liable to the estate for the transfer of assets.
Just a point of interest.
I'm a notary (and it's free) if you're local.

Re: Notary Public
Actually- you can get in a big trouble as a notary. Most attorneys are notaries and the most common disciplinary complaint is abuse of the notary (mainly- not asking for ID).
That being said, you should be able to find a notary at almost any bank, real estate office, insurance office and law firm.

Yes, village, town and city halls must have a notary on staff.
Where in NYC are you located? I'm a notary and at Madison & 36th if you are stuck.
