Now that the mums are dead...
What can I put in their place. It will look so hideous when I take them out. All I have in the space are rocks and black mulch.

I would not take them out because most likely they will grow back next year. I know they look horrible but it will cost you a lot less next year if you wait and see which ones come back next year, not all will but in my case most of them do come back each year.

I can't think of anything you can plant now that it's getting cold. You can put in bulbs for the spring and summer, but you need to do it soon before the ground really freezes.
There are small evergreen shrubs you could use, but I'm not sure now is the best time to plant them. You could try more mums, but they will die soon, really not worth it. If you have a secure space, you could arrange pumpkins and some gourds.
