NPR: remember I asked for mommy vibes..DH's job...

for my DH's job situation?

Well - good and bad news.

Good news is, he got an offer (yay!)

Bad news is, it's WAY less than he is used to making. At this point, he's been on unemployment for OVER a year (I think it runs out in June), and I am really just happy he got something. I told him to call them back and ask if they can go a little higher (I'm in HR - we do that all the time). Even if he accepts it, then continues to look. His argument is that he has been getting interviews now (which is true) - but I am just nervous if he declines the offer, will we have to wait another year + for an offer again? When unemployment runs out we are screwed. We need something to come through.

What do you guys think? It would be about a $20k paycut from what he was making in 2008, but it's still a LOT more than unemployment of course.

Re: NPR: remember I asked for mommy vibes..DH's job...

oh DARN!! I wish this was HAPPIER news!! I'm so glad he got an offer!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon But I can imagine how tough it is to take a huge paycut. Our friend in Pittsburgh had that happen to her...but luckily, after having taken the job with the paycut, she found another job that paid more a few months later. You never know.

Take it from Brett who hops from job to job (By the way, he got the job I told you about Chat Icon)....if he has to jump ship for something better, DO IT!

I say take it...it's definitely better than unemployment. It will take the pressure of off you, certainly.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with the others, I think he should take it and keep looking. And if something better comes along then he can jump on that. Chat Icon

I think your DH has no choice and has to take that job, any job at this point. I don't think it's a good idea for him to try to negotiate the salary in this economy bc what if they take the offer back?

He can keep looking for something better while he is working Chat Icon

I have never ever heard of an offer being rescinded just because you ask for more $$...the worst they will say is no

Me either. Definitely try to negotiate. If they say "no", tell him to ask for a date, say 6 months from now, where his performance could be evaluated for an increase.

Congratulations to your DH!

Re: NPR: remember I asked for mommy vibes..DH's job...

I would have him negotiate the salary (def ask for something specific and have the data to back up why the job is worth more) but take the job regardless if they say no. It's always easier to find a job when you are less pressured to find one! Keep us posted and congrats to him.

Take it! Something is better than nothing, especially if his unemployment is going to run out soon.

I definitely think he should take it!!
Only because even if he is getting interviews now...they might be all offering the same amount...since the economy has taken such a hit...this might be 'the going rate' for his job at this point. Chat Icon
