NPR:anyone understand medical lab results?
what does the AST number mean? and the monocytes? thanks

Monocytes are leukocytes and have something to do with our immune system. If a lab report shows elevated monocytes it can show that there is an infection...they do a monocyte count when they run a complete blood count (CBC).
AST I think is run when they are doing a liver function test.

AST is a liver function enzyme. If it's a little high and ALT is normal I would worry.
Monocytes can be falsely elevated if the neutrophils are low. So it really depends on the other numbers. If it's 70% monocytes it's a different story.
