my friend is an RN at Schneiders Children's hospital. She works 3 days a week - 12 hour shifts (8 am - 8 pm). One week out of the month she works 4 days a week.

She loves it.

It depends on the type of nursing. My co-worker is an RN. She used to work in the PICU 12 hour shifts. She got stuck with all the holidays, though, b/c there was always someone who had more seniority. Oh, this was at Schneider's. She eventually did some type of peds research (i don't remember specifically). She worked 4 10 hour days. Now she's a nursing admin at an alzheimer's research center. She still does some clinical work but it's mostly admin. M-F 8 hour days-flexible.

DH's job just hired a nurse to do trainings. Hours are M-F 8 hour days-flexible.

I have several friends who are nurses as well---one in particular who is new to the field. She seems to get stuck with all the crappy shifts as well due to the seniority thing.

I think she works a schedule of 12 hour shifts with 3 days off, then 3 days on again.

I know someone who has been doing it a lot longer and has a better schedule that allows her to be home with her children more.

They are hospital nurses though. There are other places that are totally hurting for nurses where you can work in the field, 9-5, or more of a flexible schedule from what I see (ie. home health care agencies, VNS, YAI, etc.).

I bet the pay and benefits are not necessarily as good though ;).

i am an RN at a hospital.. i work 3 12 hour shifts in a week.. i basically make my own schedule.. i work 7am to 7pm.. and yes i work every other weekend (required) and every other holiday... alternating between them. there is great flexibility since there are so many different types of nursing you can go into! its a great career, decent pay and i do it mostly for the hours.. very flexible with kids!

My one friend also gets paid for having to be "on-call" and not neccesarily having to "go in". Maybe the RNs on the board can describe that in more detail, and what it entails.

I work 12 hour night shifts (7p-7:30am), every other weekend, and usually get stuck working most holidays.
The only holiday that we really get a choice in is to work either christmas or new years, so I work every new years eve and day so I can have off every christmas eve and day.
We theoretically make our own schedule, but whenever the schedule comes out they just put you when they want to anyway, but that might have more to do with short staffing than anything else, I have heard of places where they actually honor the schedule you make, but that is rare as far as I know.
The only nurses that I know who have jobs that are on call are nurses that work in the cath lab, and I have a friend that works L+D in NSUH who takes call. If there are others, I don't know, but its not that common. They don't pay you the same rate as you get paid when you are working.
