Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities in LI

May be a long shot, but I am looking into a nursing/rehab for my grandfather, he had a stroke... anyone heard of any that are particularly good? Anyone hear of Belair Care Center in Bellmore, or Broadlawn manor in Amityville? TIA!!Chat Icon

My Aunt was suppose to go to Broadlawn, but I think they were full at the time so she went to Woodbury. They were great with her - PTs, etc.
She had her leg amputated below the knee and at the time she was 85. They taught her a lot.

Re: Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities in LI

Hi! I went through this with BOTH of my grandparents almost a year ago. You mentioned two facilities in Nassau so I'm assuming your grandfather is in Nassau. I have not heard of Belair Care but I considered Broadlawn Manor. My friend's mom works there and her grandmother was there for 3 years. She spoke very highly of it but we're in Suffolk so we wanted my grandfather closer to home.

My grandmother was in Island Nursing and Rehab in Holtsville for 6 weeks. This place was beautiful! Only a few years old, very clean and modern, staff was great. My grandfather was in St. James Healthcare in St. James for 3 months. The facility itself was older and more run down but the staff was great and so attentive and they were very family oriented. He passed away there in late January, we didn't make it in time but his aide was with him and stayed with him until my grandmother arrived.

We had hired an elder care attorney who helped us get my grandfather into a place and other places that were highly recommended were Gurwin Geriatric, Medford MultiCare and the L.I. Vets home at Stony Brook (not sure if your grandfather is a vet or not). One piece of advice I have is VISIT the facility first, take a tour and ask questions even if you think they're dumb!!

Good luck, hope Grandpa is ok.

Re: Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities in LI

I don't know of either of those places, but my Great-Grandmother was in another rehab facility out here in Suffolk (not worthy enough to be mentioned). I just want to give you this piece of advice. We had to send her there after she had a stroke. They put her in the rehab section only for a limited time and then moved her to the nursing home section. My grandmother never fully recovered from her stroke and really needed more rehab and we had to hire outside help.

Make sure when you go to these facilities that he gets the care and he gets it until he is fully recovered. Don't let them push him out of rehab. I don't know if they have different parts for rehab and a nursing home section or whether he will be there permanently or not, but I just wanted to let you know that. I hope I didn't ramble.

Good luck with your Grandfather and I hope all is well! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Broadlawn Manor in Amityville is a wonderful nursing care facility. My grandmother was there for 7 years. My mom is a volunteer aid there and she said the staff is really wonderful.

Broadlawn is terrific. My husband's grandmother was there for under a year and the nurses were very caring.

I only know nursing homes. You may want to post to Tah-Wee-Zah. She's been through it with her dad.

Re: Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities in LI

My great Uncle was in Bel Aire last summer...do not go there. It was horrible when ever we went to visit him. Bugs flying around...yuck. My mom even contacted the county, they investigated but didn't find much.
