Nursing School- UPDATED
I really want to become a nurse. I have wanted to for years. I had DD right out of high school which threw me off track. I started going to NCC to take pre-reqs and general elective type classes after she was born. Well, now it's time to go to nursing school. I applied last year for NCCs program, but as it turns out, a 3.9GPA wasn't good enough to get me in. Oh well. I've decided instead to just go for a BSN.
I have the application for Molloy in front of me, but I can't bring myself to fill it out. I'm so scared. I am a mommy of two (4 & 6 months) & I work PT. Working isn't optional, but fortunately, I have a job where I willl be able to study & do work during my down time. Has anybody on here gone through nursing school while working PT & taking care of the kiddos? Can I really do this? I've done college, work & kids before, but I'm still scared.
Any insight would be appreciated!
UPDATE: I was accepted into the program at Molloy. I'm still hesitating to send back the confirmation form because I keep going back & forth on whether I can do this or not.
I'd just like to thank you all for yout input!

Re: Nursing School
Nursing programs are VERY competive and hard to get into right now.....i would reapply at NCC or what about farmingdale? Honestly nursingschool is VERY hard espically working and with a family....i would def do AA rather than BSN for your situation...and there isnt a huge pay difference from what ive seen between BSN and AA....this way you can atleast work as a nurse while doing your BSN. Im from suffolk so im not to sure of nursing school in the city but i heard there are some great ones....i would apply at as many schools as possible....i went to a seminar at SCC and they told me they accpet about 30 people each semester out of 1500+ and its like that everywhere! Good Luck

Re: Nursing School
It is definitely doable. Hard, but doable. If you have a great support system, it will make it that much easier.
I would definitely suggest applying to Farmingdale's AA program as well- you still have time! They have you take an entrance exam in addition to looking at your transcript. There's a book for the test (I took it out from the library). Ace the test and you'll get into the program.
Don't listen to the hearsay about how many people get accepted or how impossible it is- anything worth having is worth working for. You can do it. It may take a little time to get that balance, and some things will have to give a little, but it IS doable! Good luck. Now, GO APPLY TO FARMINGDALE NOW!

Re: Nursing School
My friend did it, while working full time, with a child and going through a divorce. I have always wanted to do it. She is a real inspiration.

Why is NCC advising him on what credits Farmingdale would accept?! WAY out of line on their part, imo.

Re: Nursing School
I have to take CE credits for my job and it's hard even with 1 kid.
But if there is a will there is a way.
You will need dedication, commitment and make sure everyone is on board that when it's study time... well, it's study time and not disturbing mommy or wife!!!
I agree that an AA might be easier to set goal for. I looked into nursing. My understanding is that the bachelor degree is not paying much more than the associate degree.
Go for it!!!! Nothing worst that thinking "I could have done it" but never did. Before you know it you will done!

I don't understand this also. Both schools are SUNY, ALL credits should transfer!!

Re: Nursing School
I'm sorry to crash (and Dani I say go for it! You are young and you can do it I'm sure :) )
I have a question. I'm in NJ so the LI schools don't apply to me, but I've also thought of doing a nursing program too. I just had a baby and will be returning to my office job FT in november. Are there any programs for an AA program that I can do partially online - until of course I have to do clinical stuff? At this point I can't go back to school at night or anything...

Re: Nursing School
Thank you everyone for the inspirational stories! I finally applied & I feel good about it. I am very much hoping that I'll be able to pull it off & get through nursing school successfully!
The reason I didn't try the AA program at Farmingdale is because I didn't take A&P2 yet, which isn't a pre-req at Nassau. I had planned to take at Nassau this semester, but long story short, there was a screw up on Nassau's part with my records which has been ongoing since I changed my name & I wasn't able to get an opening in the class by the time they really fixed it. I'm afraid to go back to take just A&P2 this semester for the AA program at Farmingdale because if I don't get in (which I fear I won't because even with a 3.9GPA over 50+ credits wasn't good enough at Nassau), then I'll feel I wasted a semester taking just one class when I could've taken more. So I guess now I just wait & hope for the best!

Re: Nursing School
I applied to farmingdale before i took a&p2. I applied in December and started A&P2 the following january. It was a pre-req to be completed before you entered the program, but you didnt need it in order to apply (that was the same for NCC at the time). I was accepted to f'dale with a 3.8 and know people who had lower than that in my class.
