Nut-Free School and Valentine’s Treat with peanuts

Our pre-school is nuts-free. Two children in our class including DS have nuts allergies.  All parents receive an email before major holidays reminding us that no treats containing nuts are allowed.

And yet, DS had a mr. Goodbar ‘made with chocolate and peanuts’ candy in his backpack when he returned home from pre-school on Valentine’s Day.

Should I bring it up to the teacher or the director of the pre-school?  Nuts allergies can be life-threatening. WWYD?

1 million % YES! That's downright SCARY! Your child or the other children could have had a life altering consequence due to their complacency.

Yes bring it up and the school will send out another notification to the parents. They don't check the good bags so I would bring it to their attention.

My DS goes to a peanut free school and I'm actually surprised that some parents sent in plain m&ms in some of the goody bags. I always read the labels before I send anything in.

Wow, I am shocked the teachers let that go home with your ds. I would be livid and would absolutely bring it up with the pre-school!

Yes, I would bring it up. My son has 2 children in his class for a peanut allergy and while they don’t really enforce a peanut free, since these children’s mom have to approve snack and bring a alternate snack just in case, but its still scary. I try to put myself in that moms shoes and saw what if that was my kid. I actually have snack tomorrow and was asked to bring in jelly sandwiches. I went out and bought a new jelly, bc I was afraid of cross contamination.

My son has a peanut allergy abd that awseome that you thought to buy a new jelly. That could be very dangerous for the kids is there was traces of peanuts in the jelly.

As the mother of a DD with a peanut allergy, I am horrified for you. We have had several incidents at my DD's allegedly nut free preschool that have left us very concerned.

Absolutely unacceptable . And I am usually the person complaining some of the precautions go a bit too far sometimes.

No, you're right. I actually shouldnt be surprised because I actually forget sometimes too. Since its so many bags the teachers just put them in the backpacks for the parents to go through.

One time I was going to pack the pb&j bites for my sons snack and my DH reminded me I couldnt. That was stupid of me! I now have his peanut free snacks on a separate shelf so I dont make that mistake.

Say something.

DS school is not peanut free, but they sent a reminder home that no parents should send in candy on Valentine's Day.

i never knew regular m&m's were not allowed! i read the labels on things i am iffy on, like granola bars. i usually dont send my daughter in with it if i am unsure.

honestly, as a parent with a child without a peanut allergy.....we just get a letter saying nothing with peanuts. i read some labels and im confused if i can send it bc it says made in facility with peanuts, etc....

It amazes me how many people do not take these things seriously. I have 2 children with severe nut allergies and my own MIL will bring things into my house that say may contain nuts it makes me bonkers Chat Icon Chat Icon I would absolutely bring it to the attention of the school. I can see people not reading a label and thinking an M&M is ok but for Pete's sake you know a Mr. Goodbar has peanuts in it. People are so inconsiderate!

I would ask the school to start including a list of what IS allowed to help those parents that don't get it. My DDs nursery school did this 7 years ago. It listed every brand/product that was acceptable. If it's not on the list don't bring it.

I agree.

People don't take it seriously at all and it kills me.

I said something to a mother at DD2's PreK event who thought opening one of those little dippable Nutella to go containers was a good idea while standing NEXT to my nut allergic daughter. I was livid. She rolled her eyes and made a snarky comment to me about it "not being a big deal".

PreK, K, 1st.. even 3rd and 4th in some cases.. these kids aren't really old enough to understand completely what can happen. Teachers can only do so much in classes of 20+ kids. Parents should be able to understand and should teach their children by example that they should not tease allergic kids or belittle them by doing things like eye rolling or ignoring the rules.

I don't expect people to be nut free, but I do expect people to be considerate. Sending in Mr. Goodbars is just plain rude, inconsiderate, and ignorant.

I agree! For a kid with a nut allergy, that candy is like putting a loaded gun in his hands. Seriously, I would flip.

honestly, i wouldnt go that far. when your child does not have a nut allergy it isnt the first thing on your mind when you are picking foods out.

i have sent my kid into school with something containing peanuts before. i was in a rush and had a screaming sick newborn....i just grabbed a snack and threw it in her lunchbox so we could get out of the house. i didnt do it because i was rude, inconsiderate, or ignorant. and you know what....i sent m&m's in for halloween....i honestly had NO idea that plain m&m's had peanuts. i do not read every label....i read labels of things i am unsure of. It would have never crossed my mind that plain m&m's have peanuts.

you can not blame parents and call them those things. we are not educated in peanut allergies! maybe you should speak to the school and have them give a detailed handout. Like someone above posted....can my kid bring in things that say 'produced in facility that handles peanuts'? because i feel like most snacks say that?
