NYC banned free formula samples in its public hospitals
Did anyone hear this program on NPR this morning? NYC banned the free formula samples you get from the hospital after delivery, in a bold step to encourage breastfeeding. They say that 75% of the women in NYC leave the hospital BFing... that number seems really high.

Re: NYC banned free formula samples in its public hospitals
I can see why they are doing it, but what about the lower income people who can't BF and the free formula really helps?
As much as I wanted to BF, I never prodcued a drop of milk with either kid and when we left the hospital with Andy we had enough formula for the first week home.
There should be an option for people to get it if they so choose.

I have mixed feelings about it - on the one hand, I really don't like that the pressure on women is ever-increasing to breastfeed - it's a mother's choice, and one option over another shouldn't be stuffed down her face by nurses, lactation consultants and doctors.
But, on the other hand, it's not exactly fair that the formula companies get an upper hand by product solicitation at the very start, in the hospital. I think we should all start out with a clean slate, without any undue pressure.
I'm sure if a poor family needs the formula, there are other means for obtaining it.

Re: NYC banned free formula samples in its public hospitals
I don't really think it's going to make a difference in whether someone breast feeds or not. I certainly didn't decide to FF for the free formula I got at the hospital. They gave me one small can of formula and a couple of the tiny RTF bottles. That would hardly be enough formula to make a difference for someone that is needy. WIC provides free formula to mother's that are low income.

Wow, we got one diaper bag with 4 big RTF bottles and then another diaper bag full of the small ones you put the nipple on, and then the nurse brought more when we were leaving and told me to put them in the bag.
But I'm thinking more about the families in our area who make too much to qualify for WIC but are still struggling. We see posts on here about it. I'm not saying it's a solution, but it helps.

I think the ban is ridiculous. Many women walk into childbirth knowing they are not breastfeeding, there should be the samples at the hospital for them. I guess it's not the biggest deal, but my hangup is the "bold step to encourage breastfeeding". Isn't there enough encouragement? I was told about 80 times to go for it while in the hospital..lactation consultants were available at the drop of a hat, etc...
And the 75% leaving the hospital breastfeeding may have some truth to it, but statistics also show that around 50% actually continue once home.

You know..oddly enough no one said a word to me about breastfeeding at the hospital! Right after she came out they asked if I was FF or BF and I said FF. Never a peep again after that! I was really prepared to have to defend my decision, but fortunately no one bothered me about it.

Re: NYC banned free formula samples in its public hospitals
This is obnoxious- if you don't want the formula- don't take it... why do health officials have to make the decision for me- am i that stupid? I think their time & energy would be better served getting the McDonalds out of kids mouths than the formula...
