NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
Where do you live? How do you get to NYC? (LIRR, driving, etc.) How long does it take you door to door?
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Add. question: Does the commute get to you?
I reall want to move by my SIL by Port Jeff. (childcare (family), location, houses, etc.) but I'm afraid of the commute...as I commute for about an hour now...but in a way I am willing to sacrifice this for a better quality of life.

Re: NYC Commuters
I live in East Rockaway and take the LIRR, then the 2 or the 3 to Times Square and the 7 to Grand Central (I work on 3rd & 46th.)
Door to door, depending on the train I get on it takes anywhere from 65-80 minutes.
ETA UPDATE: No, it doesn't get to me. I don't really think about it anymore. It can get frustrating from time to time, when your life is run by the train schedule, but i've learned not to let it bother me much. it is what it is. the biggest perks is that there is no rush hour traffic to sit in and you can sleep.

See if I lived in Kings Park, I personally would hop on the Sunken Meadow and get the train out of Deer Park. You would save about 15-20 minutes each way (because the Ronkonkoma line is faster than the Port Jeff line).

Re: NYC Commuters
DH goes from Huntington to Jersey City - it's about 1 hour 45 minutes. If he were in midtown, it would be at least 20-30 minutes shorter.

I live in Rockland County and work downtown. I take Metro North/NJ Transit into Hoboken (once it passes the state line it changes names) and take the PATH over to WTC. Door to door it takes between 1hr 20 minutes (express train) or 1hr 45 minutes (local train).

Re: NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
Does the commute get to me?
most days its just part of my day...I have been commuting in to the city for over 20 years and only drove to a job for about 9 months when I worked on LI.
When the trains run ontime and no problems...the commute is fairly easy....but when there are problems....it seems it takes forever to get home and everyone is aggrevated!!

Re: NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
does the commute get to me? Sometimes. In the mornings it doesn't bother me at all (I sleep and enjoy my morning sleep).
Sometimes on the way home I get antsy. I sit with a group of people and we chat or play cards which def. makes the time fly. I notice on Fridays I'm extremely antsy to get home.
Plus, when there are delays I get aggitated. But I say, it does beat sitting in traffic on the LIE.

Re: NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
I take the Babylon Branch from Wantagh to NYC. It takes approximately 50 minutes to get into NYC. I take the 7:26 or 7:48 which are express so it only makes 2 or 3 stops before Penn. Plus it's the first stop in the morning so I always get a seat.
I really enjoy the train ride because I have time to sleep or read or just stare out the window and relax ALL BY MYSELF
Friends have said that I take a really good line though so if I lived in Glen Cove or somewhere I might not be a big fan of the train then.

Same for me, but I take the Bellmore train because DH said there is a fee to park in Wantagh. Is that true?

yes dude.
I was looking around, saw some nice things out east.
2 hours to where we work.
4 hours both ways.
NO.
CAN.
DO.
to me, 4 hours travel time...and 2 hours MORE away from my home/family, does not = better quality of life.
there is NO WAY I could cook from scratch every night like that
ETA: there are MANY insurance co's in Melville, which I imagine would be better for you commute wise. If you decide to move, you could look into relocating your job as well.

Syl I live in KP and that drive takes about 10 minutes -not worth it IMO just to save another 5-10 minutes. I hate driving, so the less I have to do of it the better.
I live 1 minute from the KP station and I take an express train to Hunters Point every AM out of KP and then I take the 7 to midtown. Takes me about 1 1/2 hours door to door.
Working downtown is going to add at least another 20 min to your commute from Penn Station or Grand Central any way you look at it.
ETA: Port Jeff is another 20-25 minutes East of me. That's a little too long for me. I'm just at the point where I can stand it. I read, make my lists and sleep sleep sleep on the train.
I get home around 7P every night.

Re: NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
I don't mind the commute at all - It's just part of my day - I lived in midtown for awhile and thought goign back to the LI commute was going to be miserable, but it honestly does not bother me at all - With the exception of the ocassional MESS @ Penn, or Jamaice or whatever the reason may be for the 2 hours delay on the LIRR -
I take the Babylon line from Massapequa and catch express trains to and from work -
If I stay late or go in on a weekend it's a PITA b/c the trains are local and make a million stops - but that's not a regular day -
On an average day my commute is about 1.5 hours door to door - I walk from Penn to the office and back -

DH commutes from Wantagh to Woodhaven, Queens, parks the car & then jumps on the subway. He use to drive into NYC & dreaded it. He says this commute cuts about 25-30 minutes off his commute. He is usually home at the end of the day in 40 minutes flat.

Re: NYC Commuters *Updated with an additional question*
I live in Forest Hills. I take the Express Bus in the morning and subway home at night. It take me anywhere from 30-40 minutes door-to-door in the morning and about 35-45 minutes on the way home.
The commute does not get to me (though I wish I lived in Manhatan!), but I completely understand what you are saying.
We are considering moving to the suburbs in a few years, but the idea of a long commute (and being tied down to the LIRR or Metro North schedule) scares me.
If we move to LI, the furthest we will probably move is Rockville Centre. A decent commute is VERY important to me and I am willing to sacrifice the size of my house and land in order to have a better commute. Others prefer the opposite.
There are also a lot of towns in Nassau County that may be able to provide you with a better commute, but still give you the quality of life and proximity to your SIL.
