NYC DOE Religious Observance
For those of you that teach or have taught for the city, can you be denied for a religious observance or can they only grant you say 3 hours, i work for a program where we are not in one building and are having a professional development on Dec. 8 the person in charge is saying she cant have so many people missing a PD, so she can't give us the whole day. a few of us have contacted the union and are waiting to hear back hoping someone here would know
thankiss

It is my understanding you can't be denied a RO day.

I agree; they can't deny you a day of Religious Observance. Especially because they're afraid of not having enough people for a PD workshop. That's nuts. Gotta love teaching in the City, right?

Re: NYC DOE Religious Observance
How do RO days work in terms of your CAR... do they take a day from there, or do they just not pay you for the day? I have never taken an RO day, but I know many teachers in my school do, so I am wondering.....

Re: NYC DOE Religious Observance
i don't know the policy exactly, but if you are trying to take a RO day for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, i don't know if they honor that one. technically, although it is a Holy Day of Obligation, you really could go to Mass before work, during lunch or in the evening, or even the evening before. Mass at most is an hour long. I think a lot of people were taking Holy Thursday off (similar situation - you only go to Mass on the evening on that day) and some city schools were not giving the RO for that day. The Immaculate Conception is not a day where you need the whole day off, like say, Yom Kippur for Jews, who spend the whole day in temple. I can see why your principal might only give you 3 hours. And I am a practicing Catholic and while I would love the day off, I can see why they wouldn't give it to you. my district gives no RO for Holy Days of Obligation (except Christmas and Easter).

Re: NYC DOE Religious Observance
I worked with an Orthodow Jew in NYC and she took off for smaller Jewish Holidays - like Purim. She said she had to use a day from her bank (personal day), but was never denied.

If you are granted the RO day it does not come out of your CAR you lose a percentage of the days pay, but not the whole days pay
i do know that you really don't need the whole day you can go to mass before of after work, i feel like its more the principle of the situation, i have taken my ROs for the past 8 years and all of a sudden you are denying it because of a PD day
also in all probability this PD will be taking place in Manhattan so going before work will be hard and lunch is not happening
