I am a newly hired NYC teacher. If you opt out of health benefits, do you receive a "bonus"? how much?

Yes, I'm not sure the exact amount. You get 1/2 the money in December and 1/2 in June. See your payroll secretary. It's called the health benefits buy-out waiver program.

Buy-Out Waiver Program: If you are covered under your spouse’s or domestic partner’s non-City health insurance plan, or through Medicare Part A and Part B, then you may be eligible for a buy-out waiver (currently $1,000 for a family coverage waiver and $500 for an individual coverage waiver). Application required.
As of September 2009.

the "non-city" thing is annoying, for example when I eventually go on DH's plan I get nothing bc he is a fireman in the city...
