NYC Restaurant for Hubby's 40th Birthday

DH and his friends are all turning 40 this year. In lieu of a party, DH decided that he wants to go away just the 2 of us (obviously I am fine with that! LOL). Now, he also wants to get together with his group of friends to go out for his birthday. It will be about 10 - 15 couples. We all live all over, from southern NJ to Queens to LI. NYC is most central although everyone will travel to get together...
I originally wanted to go to Sammy's Roumanian (if you have been there, you will understand why...). Now he is concerned that it might be too expensive (everyone pays on their own when they get together). He is also a little concerned that the food is just unhealthy enough for some of the group to scare them off.

With all that said, where else would you suggest for a group this size?

Thanks!

Re: NYC Restaurant for Hubby's 40th Birthday

We did Sammys for DH's birthday one year and it was a large group...while we loooove the restaurant and ambiance and it's just fun all around, it does get INSANELY expensive bc they honestly have no rhyme or reason and put whatever the hell they want on the check, it's crazy so I agree with your DH...

As for a large group, what about Carmines or a family style like that, not my favorite spot but easy for everyone...

We used to live on the UES so we used to do Tony's DiNapoli for EVERYTHING! In fact, that was how DH proposed (well, that was where he ordered form the night he proposed!) While it is a great place, I feel like we are looking for something different...

Yah thas why I wasn't too keen on the Carmines idea its just eh, esp for a 40th birthday...Ummmmmm let me think, it's hard with a large group. I did a large group dinner at both Koi and Keens...Keens is a great great "male" atmosphere and they have great round tables etc but both will be pricey but a little bit less chaotic than Sammys

Keen's is AMAZING but super $$$.

Budahakan (sp?) is good. I went to a birthday dinner with 20 people and it was great. Love the rooms.

I like Stanton Social for large groups. Tapas style and delish.

How about Tao? I don't love the food but the atmosphere is fun and they can definitely handle a big group.

Aja is like a mini Tao. GREAT food and if you make a reservation a week in advance they could handle a big group.

Re: NYC Restaurant for Hubby's 40th Birthday

I am not sure what their accommodations are like for a large party but I took DH to Blue Smoke for this 30th and he loved it. There were only like 5 of us so we had sat in a booth so I can't remember if they had tables in the back.

Lorelei on the LES. it's a german beer garden and so much fun (though definitely make a reservation!!) they also have a lounge on the lower level.

Xunta is a catalan style tapas bar in Alphabet City that I LOVE. there is no hard liquor, only wine and I think beer, but the food is awesome and unique. they also usually have live flamenco dancing on thurs night.

also, Sala, another tapas bar with two locations (they also have a full bar. though, that is not always a good thing Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )

all of these places are fun, and can be as cheap or expensive as you want them to be.

Love Dos Caminos
Stanton Social is also great

We did Sammy's a couple of years ago. Fun, but overpriced and the food wasn't that great.
