NYC teachers- budget
Did you guys hear about what could happen?
After 5 years teaching I might not only be excessed but I might lose my job altogether

The state is planning to cut it's education funding to the state and our city schools. It will end up being like the 1970's all over again. The biggest issue will be lay-offs. The mayor may have to seriously lay-off 8000 teachers. This means that those at the bottom will have no job, no health benefits, no pension. Even if your not the one getting excessed or laid-off, your classes will be filled to the brim. That means that 3,4,& 5 grade could have 32 students, 1st & 2nd will have 28, and K will have 25

i got excessed last year with 5 years on. at the uft office last week, the number for layoffs being thrown around was 5000. i am scared!

I am number 1 in my school to get excessed..last year 6 teachers were excessed in my school and I was the last one to be excessed (but then was re-hired due to higher enrollment) so now im the lowest man on my schools totem pole. So after 5 years in, now i might not only be excessed but i might lose my job completely

From what my rep said--layoff are citywide, not based on your building...so while you may have the least senority in your school in the city you don't.
I do not know how may years "8,000 layoffs" would go up to...3 or 4?

It's hard to say- it will be by subject area (I think) but that still does not tell us much.
What I want to know is if they are considering retirements and people who will leave the system (either quit teaching, or go to LI, etc.) when they throw out these numbers.
And I also want to know why the DOE seems to be actively recruiting. And why Mulgrew isn't pursuing a retirement incentive, or thinking about a pay cut. I've said it before- I would take a pay cut before seeing people laid off.
I feel like the mayor and chancellor are stringing us along- they want all their concessions, so they will threaten layoffs. Klein is still intent on going after seniority, and while I would feel terrible for new teachers to be laid off, this would be a bad idea too.

ITA with the pay cut, freeze etc.
I also agree @ the buy out for retirees--a lot of people in both buildings I am in hoping for that.
I hope these are typical scare tactics....

i highly doubt that they will do a buyout or retirement incentive. my dad is union and waited for one for a long time (he finally gave up and retired last year) he said that it isnt cost effective for them to do so.
fingers crossed for all.
and yes, as of right now, layoffs would be from the "master" citywide list. unless bloomie finds a way to change that too.

Oh boy but FYI: those are not abnormal class sizes, we have this now. In first grade 4 of the 5 classes have 30 and the upper grades have even more than that.. and that is because caps have been already raised this year. I teach CTT and they have raised the 1- spe ed cap to 12
