NYC Teachers: Childcare leave? (Kind of long...)
I am due to give birth on 12/24. If I go on or around that date, I will not have to return to work until early April. I am thinking of taking my 14 weeks FMLA (it gets extended b/c of the December and Feb. breaks) and then the rest of the semester as a childcare leave.
My question is: What happens to my summer pay if I take April, May and June off as a childcare leave? I worked almost the entire Fall semester and I will be on payroll until March 1 when my CAR and grace period runs out. Do I still get paid/benefits for july and august?
I know I have to talk to my payroll secretary, but I was wondering if anyone had the inside scoop...
(We totally need a payroll secretary on this board! )

Okay, so this happened to me just this past summer.
Your summer pay will be effected. I was off from Sept 27-December 6. My total summer pay was 2,000 less because of it. The summer pay is pro-rated for the total number of days you worked that school year.
And my payroll secretary didn't even tell me this!

It will be effected but I don't know how much. I took off from sept. and went back in feb. ,my check was GREATLY effected. It may not be bad but look into it before you decide.

I took off from Jan 7th to June 1st.
Becareful because if they take you off payroll (which with a childcare leave they do) you will NOT get a summer check at all. They will just pay you what they owe you in September.
This happened to me. Payroll closed May 22nd for the year and I came back in June so I was never put back on it. I had to beg and cry for them to issue me a special "check" for the time I had come back and the summer.
IF you are not going back at all for the rest of the school you it will be a problem for you.
