I am in D75 and I can say that we got TONS of kids and they are all really severe this year. All of the moderate/mildly autistic kids are in community schools. We have 20 new K students and they are all non-verbal, low-cognitive, etc. My class is typically a higher-functioning class (slightly below grade level) and we have so many new kids that I have more severe kids than I have ever had. I am also over ratio and have 10 kids in an 8:1:1. Chat Icon

Unfortunately, I'm seeing similar results.

I feel like they are just pouring many high needs students into our schools without adequate staffing and funding. There's this "make it work" mentality. Maybe I'm short-sighted, but I'm not seeing the upside to these changes....? Can anyone tell me them?

My heart breaks for these kids because I KNOW they aren't going to get the services they need/are required to receive.Chat Icon

Oh, its not. They told me to get their ABLLS done ASAP so they can do IEPS and make a few of them 6:1:1. They legally can do one more than the ratio, so I can have 9 legally. Its just hard to assess when I have 9 kids in an 8:1:1 and half of them are really 6:1:1-type kids who don't really work independently. Its not fair to the other kids, since the low ones need so much support, I don't have the time to give attention to the ones who can work alone.
