NYC teachers...do you think that year round school could happen?
I can see myself staying in NYC schools for the duration of my career, but if a year round calendar started, I think I'd leave.
So, do you think it could happen?

Oh, jeez, I hope not. And anyone who would vote for a contract with this provision in it is a fool.
Would I love more money? Sure, but doing year round school would not be worth the extra 10 grand.
Year-round schools, imho, are not the solution to the problems facing the children.

I totally agree. I'd never go for it. Teaching is difficult enough with the summer vacation... if they took that away, I couldn't and wouldn't do it anymore. And it is definitely NOT going to fix anything so it would be pointless.

Re: NYC teachers...do you think that year round school could happen?
I don't think it would happen for a few reasons.
1) They would lose a ridiculous amount of their teaching staff. I can tell you that my school alone would be a ghost town. With all the assessments and paperwork these days and complete lack of teaching going on there is no way that teachers could do this all year round.
2) The city is waaaaaaaaay to cheap to install A/C units in EVERY class in EVERY school which is exactly what they would have to do. Last week with that heat wave my classroom was over 110 degrees!!! You can't teach in those conditions!!
3) With the high ethnic population in many of the schools the year round thing would not fly. I know that the majority of kids in my school head back to "their country" during the summer to be with family and they are gone 2-3 months at a time.
I barely get through the school year as it is, if I had to do it ALL year I would find another profession ASAP!!! As it is I'm thankful that I am pregnant and due in Sept. so I'm not going back. 3 years in the city schools is plenty for me and I will NOT in any way miss it!!!

Good reasons! I also think all of the camps would lose out on millions of dollars, too.
Congrats, btw!

With the A/C also comes the incredible cost of upgrading the electric in every single school

Year-round school is really NOT that bad!
Click here to see a sample of year-round school calendar
That's from my school here in SD.
It's really not that bad.... It starts with prep days on 8/27.... kids start school 9/2. then a week off for thanksgiving, 4 weeks off for christmas, 4 weeks off for spring break, and school ends July 21st (And there are a few days off here and there that I didn't write out).

So you're basically not teaching any more days than we are here in NY. I don't teach in the city but I don't see it happening.

I can see the appeal in a place like San Diego where that calendar is from. However, 4 weeks off in NY in January...no thank you!!!
