OB's office running tests not wanted/needed...
November 30th i had a pap smear done that came back normal. Earlier that fall i had a full STD panel done just to be safe (you never know) and it was clean. February 4th i had my 1st prenatal appointment and the nurse took blood and i asked what they were testing for, she said blood counts and thyroid. Then the dr did a vaginal exam and swab which i again asked what they were testing for and she said vaginal culture. ok, whatever. I got a lab bill in the mail for $210 for a full STD panel including HIV test which i never wanted, they never said they were running and i asked what they were testing for. I just had a normal pap smear in November. I have a $581 bill through them right now and now a $210 lab bill for tests i never wanted and wasn't told i was getting, and i would have refused them had they told me that is what they were doing. Almost $800, im unemployed and upset they ran these tests. I have an appointment with her again tomorrow at 9:45am and plan on asking about this because im stressing now, $800...is there anything that can be done or am i SOL??

I'm not sure, but I think it's NY State law that you need to have a HIV test when pregnant.

Yes, twice per pregnancy is what I was told. Interesting to find out if the standards are different in other states.

me too. i asked my dr about the HIV test and he said they can either do it when they test for STD's or they can do it at the hospital when im in labor, but he said it's obviously more beneficial to do it prior to delivery.

It's actually not required in NY, but if you refuse it they will test the baby at birth. It is certainly routine for them to test though.
I looked up Maine's guidelines and it did not say it was required or even recommended.
I would talk to the OB and see if they can send a letter to the insurance company for medical necessity or something similar.

Re: OB's office running tests not wanted/needed...
HIV testing is not mandatory in NY State for pregnant women. It is strongly recommened and has become a routine part of prenatal care, but its not required by law. The only way they could have legally ran that test is if you had signed a consent for it. If you had an HIV test done there in the past, the consent you signed back then may cover you for the most recent test, but you'd have to check the form they used.
The only mandatory testing for HIV in this state is on newborns in the hospital-- all babies are tested @ birth.

Strongly recommended, but not required. I believe if you refuse you have to sign something stating that you refused. And they tell you that the baby will be tested at birth either way - that IS required.
