I didn't do it until last month. I totally forgot too. I actually sent Matt to do it I don't do well with needles (although yesterday when he was getting stitched up, I only got light headed once! haha)
Matt said he was more made about getting held down then he was of the needle.

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
I remember doing this with DS. He's a Jan baby and I finally got the guts to take him that April (he's 4 now..this was 3 years ago). I MADE DH go with me. I couldn't do it alone. They had DH sit in the chair with DS in his lap facing forward. DH wrapped his arms around DS and they were able to do it that way.
DS is 4 and still hates going to the Dr! He is getting better, but, it's taken some time.

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
I did it and it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated it being.
I held DS and there were two phlebotomists there - one to hold his arm and the other to draw the blood.
It was a lot less painful than I had anticipated for all of us (yes, there was crying but, it only started as the needle was going in and there was no squirming).

They did a finger stick on Teddy at that age, and he didn't cry at that but more at the squeezing of his finger. But we counted the drops going in and he was fine.

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
I had it done for both my DC. My DS was a perfect angel and didn't even flinch.
My DD cried and I had to hold her still.. but it was over very fast and it's not that bad.
I will say that IMO I think it's important to have the bloodwork done. We found out from DS bloodwork that he was anemic and had to take vitamins with iron.
It will be fine!

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
Dont worry! First the script is good for 1 year from teh date its written.
Second...we NEVER did the 1 year bloodwork. I just couldnt do it. I felt so bad for DS and so scared about how he would react.
My ped just gave me another script at his 2 year appt which was Jan 2010, when did I finally get the bloodwork you ask? Last week in Dec 2010!
And I have to say at 3yo it was fine....I still think he would have been a nightmare at 1yo.

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
Danny took Travis and he said he screamed , but it was very fast. They put a tiny IV in his arm. Then we got a phone call that they didnt get enough blood , so then I had to take him back and the pricked his finger, and that was a nightmare.

same for my son he cried more with them squeezing his finger
but his allergy test were with the butterfly in the arm and that was a lot harder - they had toruble finding hei vein and the little guy screamed

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
We bought out Ipad with us. It seriosuly paid for itself in just that vsiit alone We played an episode of Blue's Clues for DS and he didn't even flinch. It took the woman FIVE minutes just to get the blood to flow...it was torture for me and DH to watch her poke around with the needle, but DS could care less. So, I definitely recommend bringing a laptop or something to distract him.

JJ will be 18 months on Sunday & I have yet to take him but have intentions of taking him before his 18 month checkup on the 14th. I needed to do it on a day that DH is home bc there is NO WAY I am doing this alone

I opted for the finger stick. It was torture, but it was quick. We had to hold him down, and he was still squriming. I have no words of advice. It was hard, but once he was done he was fine.

Re: Oh Lord!!! Bloodwork..another question.. sorry!!
I took older DS alone and the twins alone too. It really was not that bad.
They had me sit in the chair with DS on my lap. The tech told me exactly how to hold them and it was OK. They definitely hated the being held down part more than the needle.
