OK - the gajillionth post about breastfeeding today - but I'm about to play devil's advocate...

One side of the coin:

How come we don't have post after post about celeb-women posing nude in magazines, or in movies, but if she whips out a boob to feed her child, we have so many posts about it?

Why are people (not just here - but everywhere) more comfortable with nudity in a sexual situation, be it movie, picture, whatever, but when body parts are displayed being used in the way they were actually intended, people freak out - think about it: breast feeding, watching someone giving birth in a movie, etc....

Other side of the coin

Yes, breast feeding is natural, but so is taking a dump. What if Maggie was taking a squat on a street corner? Would people still say - whats the big deal? Its a natural thing?

I have no idea how you can compare taking a dump to breastfeeding...Chat Icon

I think because people who are uncomfortable with public nudity (for whatever reason) probably feel that they have a choice to see a movie or buy a magazine, but aren't expecting or appreciative if this happens at the next table at a restaurant. Do I think there is anything wrong with breastfeeding your hungry baby in public? No - but I also don't see a reason to NOT be more discreet...
And your comment about taking a dump made me laugh cause as I was reading all the responses about people saying it's natural - I KEPT saying to myself "so is pooping, but I'm not doing that in public"

carry on!

I'm not sure what you're looking for here? Chat Icon

i think most people just think that their opinions count more than they really do.

for example- the person who says, "other people feel uncomfortable with that" translates into *I* feel uncomfortable with that... which translates into "Other people should modify their actions based on MY opinions" translates into... get over yourself! Chat Icon

I think many people think of breasts in a purely sexual way, and for some reason dont want to think of them any other way. When they are presented in a way that departs or challenges a sexual definition:

(breastfeeding, elderly woman topless at nude beach - a child wearing just bathing suit bottoms and is not old enough to have breasts but is not a 'baby' either)

then there's a reaction.

right, in OUR culture nudity, especially in public was always portrayed as a bad thing. Improper, slutty etc. I think thats why there is so much debate on it b/c our society is not ready for it. But I do understand that a mom has to feed her child too. but like I said in the other post, I'd rather not see it- exposed I mean, especially when Im eating.

Hey not to make fun but just realized was that photo taken today? Its
WOW day!!!Chat Icon

It;s natural because it is about nurting and feeling a child. A child whom relies on his/her mother for this.
Does having a bowel movement do that?
think not.
In addition, there are specific rooms EVERYWHERE for such a task...not so for breastfeeding

last but NOT Least. there are laws against defecation in public, last I checked I don't think that was true for feeding your child.

Noooo - It is NOT the same thing!!! Chat Icon You know that!!! Chat Icon And I am not comparing the 2 in that way... LOL...

BUT - they are both natural bodily actions - and there ARE places in the world where it is not taboo to expel your bodily waste in a less discrete manner....

Just like I said - I am playing devil's advocate. I personally have NO problem whatsover with a woman publicly breastfeeding - I personally feel its a beautiful thing - BUT - as an above poster agreed to - if you use the "naturla" argument, then all bets are off, at least in the world according to me Chat Icon
