I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.

I personally thought she should be covered up. Here's my response from Celebrity Gossip

There will forever be the debate back and forth, but here's my 2cents.

I see no problem with the fact that she wants to nurse in public.
I see no problem with the fact that her breat is exposed, we see it on beaches all the time.

What I DO have a problem with is her and others complete disregard for other people. Just because it is your right to do something doesn't mean you should "milk" it to the hilt.
There are people out there that are uncomfortable and just plaing don't want to see your kid sucking away and hanging off of you. Not to mention the fact that she looks like she's in a restaurant.

Be discreet. I'm not saying don't nurse in public at all, just have a little courtesy for others.
We all want people to be courteous to us, especially as women, why can't we try to make others feel comfortable too? Just so we can exercise our right to nurse in public? That's silly.

Are you kidding me? Not for nothing, but what's wrong with nursing in a restaurant? If you can eat there, why can't your baby? I will not even go any further with this because it's an old debate that will never die.

No, actually I am not kidding you. That's the way I feel about the subject. Why would I kid? Chat Icon

Actually in my OP did I ever say that you CAN'T nurse in a restaurant? I merely suggested to be a little more discreet. Chat Icon

very sensitive subject, I think she is doing nothing wrong and she should not have to "hide"...would I be so out there? Probably not but it is certainly her right to do so....

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.

Ugh I am so sick of this debate. So I went to the celebrity board took a look at the picture. As a nursing mom myself here are my 2 cents now. Yes I do my best to cover up while I'm nursing in public because I know there are so many close minded people out there who will never understand and I do it to avoid the stares. My goal is to nurse my child for her 1st year of life so I hope no one expects me to stay home that whole time in case while I'm out my daughter gets hungry. For anyone that's nursed a baby 6mths or older they tend to squirm and wiggle and it gets hard to keep covered so why should I go out of my way to make sure that I don't offend you?!!! Some people are going on about this like she pulled her top right off and let her baby have a field day! Unless you have a condition that causes you to constantly stare at people's chest then for crying out loud people look at something else! Chat Icon Chat Icon

The same way you have the right to say that she should be more discreet...well she has the right to do what she did.
If you can't see it as a loving act of kindness and nurturing between a mom and a baby that makes me sad.
This is an ageold debate which will never die...but really needs to.

eta- I see your avatar title says something about your own turkey, does that mean you are expecting? Be prepared, you will see nursing at day cares, at babies r us, at music and me class, at gymboree, at playdates in teh park etc...be prepared for a new world.

I can see both sides of the debate..but you won't catch me exposing my breast in public. I just never felt comfortable and never will.

i agree. when i have a baby i plan on breastfeeding and i would feel terrible if i couldnt feed my child when he/she was hungry. will i cover up and be discreet? absolutely! i'm pretty sure that was gina's point.

you know what, to each its own.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it, I have seen worse things than that.

It's very natural the bond of a mother nurturing her child and that shouldn't be seen as gross or disgusting.

its okay for breasts to be exposed, as long as a child is not feeding off of it? Chat Icon

I'd choose my child's nutrition over "regard of other's feelings" anyday.

complete silliness of an adult to whine about being offended by a child eating, IMO.

I personally dont want to see it. I guess b/c Im a private person, I would never BF in public or I would cover up.
I dont know there is just something about it, maybe b/c our culture has taught us that nudity in public is a no no.
I am all for BF anywhere but prefer the woman to be covered up. JMO.

ITA -- I'm not there yet but when I am, I will feed my baby when, where, and however I have to.

You don't want to watch, look somewhere else. Try -um - any other country in the world, where breastfeeding is seen as natual and admirable.

If I thought no one was in the vicinity and we were alone, then I might BF w/o covering up.

It's these sleezy paparazzi with their telephoto lenses that try and catch these celebs "in the act".

It's the paparazzi that have no class.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.

I saw the pictures. I think that its silly to be so upset about it.

She was feeding her baby, and whatever position is most comfortable for them is what they should do.

If you don't like it, look away. No one is forcing you to stare at it and a woman shouldn't have to worry about offending others when she's just trying to feed her child. This is why so many women are afraid to breastfeed, because so many people expect them to hide in the bathroom or put a blanket over themselves.

I think that I was WAY more shocked and offended by seeing her masturbate repeatedly with a sharpie (or whatever) in The Secretary...

Once you start hanging out with mommies, a boobie is a boobie.
