Ok for a newborn to sleep on his side?

When we put Ryan in for a nap in his co-sleeper or bassinette he is completely swaddled. We put him in on his back but he always ends up kind of tipped over Chat Icon I think in his effort to break out of the swaddle - which he usually does. Is this OK for him to sleep on his side? TIA

DS did the same thing when he was a newborn. He always ended up on his side.

The swaddling never lasted with him. He always broke out of it. Even when the nurses swaddled him at the hospital he always managed to break free of it. He's a restless kid...Chat Icon

He doesn't cry when swaddled and seems to calm when he's in it but it's like he tries to get out for a challenge Chat Icon

DD hated being on her back. We'd roll up a receiving blanket and wedge it behind her back so she'd be tipped a little to one side. (They did this in the hospital.)

DS fought me at the beginning as well...but once swaddled, he slept like a champ. I honestly believe that by me swaddling him, I have taught him good sleeping habits. He finally broke out of it three night in a row about 3.5 months later and we stopped, and he's been sleeping great.

Its ok to put them on the side during nap time...even on their belly...not swaddled of course...just check on him!

BTW: Congratulations on the birth of your DS! I must have missed the thread! So happy for you!Chat Icon

DD did the same thing, always toward her right and it was the only way she would fall asleep. I see no harm in it. Chat Icon

I always put DS on his side. I started doing it b/c I read it in the "happiest baby on the block" book and he slept much better on the side. Babies don't really like the back even though I know they should be on their back because of SIDs. DS always sleeps on his side.

Sometimes he stays on his back but his entire head is the other direction!
