From my experience, let her do it.

My mom wouldn't let me, so I used Sun In, and my hair turned orange Chat Icon Chat Icon

For her color hair, I might try some warmer brown, carmel colors...

My mom did it when I hit puberty and my hair started to darken from the hormones. She used one of those cap frosting kits from the drug store. It was cheap and easy and it came out nice! I say do that for her but don't go to drastic!

Well...highlights damage the hair but at least she's not asking for a tattoo!

I don't think it would be so bad if you let her. Sure 12 is a little young for highlights but it could be worse.

To try and hold her off, offer her an maybe offer her an updated hair cut first and see if she goes for that.

If she really really really wants them, like she's begging "mommy pleeeeease" then I think I would let her. I mean hey, she's been through enough this year... she could use a treat.

I know someone who let her daugther highlight her hair in exchange for good grades. Every quater when the grades came in and the were good she would take her for touch ups. I thought it was good!!

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It is hair and it will grow back. I also did the sun in thing and my hair was red, not orange.

Can't you just get some kind of temporary color?

Subtle streaks I'd be okay with. When I was 13 I wanted to highlight my hair—Mom said noway. So the next day when mom went out, my devious older sister frosted my hair with one of those caps. Mom came home and loved it and since she loved it, she wasn't mad at all. The downside to the story is that was probably the last time I saw my natural color until I hit age 27.

That is a great idea. Maybe a rinse or something.

I spent many years highlighted. I am now a single process but plan to go back to blonde eventually. I am pretty sure that if highlights are done right, they shouldnt directly touch the scalp so it may be less dangerous and/or damaging. I would sooner see you do something for her before she does something herself. When I was about her age, I took Jolen moustache bleach from a sleepaway camp counselor and my mom nearly had a heart attack when she saw a horrible blonde streak at the side of my head.

uhm I would hold off if she were my daughter. I think 12 is young still for such hair changes. IMO. But you know your daughter best. So I would say do what you feel is right. Chat Icon

I wasn't allowed to touch my hair color until I was 18, and even then it was only semi-permanent color. I wouldn't let her. JMO.

She could be asking for much worse. I would say let her do it. I guess if it were my daughter I would just make sure I asked her why she wanted to do it just to make sure she doesn't think something like it will make me prettier, or more popular, or the boys will like me then. I want to try my hardest to instill in her that she is beautiful just as she is and that she doesn't have to do cosmetic things for reasons other than she wants to. Does that make sense?Chat Icon I think I was 17 when I first died my hair and I finally stopped last year when I was pregnant. I guess I didn't hate my natural color as much as I thought I did.
She may do it and never want to do it again. Go for it. I think she's old enough. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It has to be hard knowing your little girl is growing up.

Pick your battles.. I don't think this one is too bad. I started at that age Chat Icon
Its better then her asking for tattoos or piercings like I was asking my mom for! I think thats why she caved in and let me have the highlights Chat Icon
