Ok, seriously...
If the farthest I can run at the moment is about 5 miles, how long, realistically, would it take me to train to run a half marathon?

Re: Ok, seriously...
Last year I stated running in January (could barely run a mile straight). I ran my first half in October.
If you add a quarter mile to half a mile onto your long run each week (which is what I did to build up my mileage) you can add on another 5-6 miles in 10-12 weeks! So I would agree with what Julie said.
I know you posted in the other thread you would like to run the Philly Half- I honestly think you have plenty of time to train for it!
I started training for my first half in May and was ran in October. When I started to train for the half my longest run at that point was a 10k.

I agree. Hal Higdeon's training plans only assume 3 mile runs for a novice runner.
Before I registered for the LI Half, the longest I had run was a 5 mile Turkey Trot.

Realistically, if you're gonna do serious training, I'd say 2-3 months. But it also depends on what your goal is, simply to finish or to actually set a goal-time.
Just be sure to do it in increments, otherwise you could risk injury.

I think the goal is just to finish. The problem though, is we're moving in 4 weeks, so I can't really train over the next 4-6 weeks because it's just madness in my house. I'll run, of course, but I don't have the luxury to do longer stretches during my runs.
I guess if I start seriously training in July, that will give me a good few months to get there. I think I'm going to try!!

I assume you're talking about the Philly half? If you start in July, you definitely have enough time. The occassions that I have run the NYCM, I typically don't start any serious training until the first week of July. Prior to that I'd be running a steady base of 5 miles maybe 3 to 4 times a week, at MOST. From there I'd just build up to 20 miles, so you can definitely do 13. Best of luck and stay healthy!
ETA: I have a friend who was into sports but had never really run before. Well he decided to run the Bklyn Half one year and half-way thru stopped for a knish on Ocean Parkway and still finished! Now there's some encouragement for everybody!

Re: Ok, seriously...
I started training with Team in Training the week before Thanksgiving (able to run um...NO miles) and ran the Long Branch Half last weekend. You can DEFINITELY train for a half in November!

12 weeks. I'm training for my first half now. I'll be running the East Hampton Half in September. I don't actually need the entire 4 months but since I have all this time, I'm putting it to good use. But there are plenty of training programs online that you can find that follow an 11 or 12 week schedule.
Good Luck!

Re: Ok, seriously...
I posted on the Philly thread, but you definitely have time even if you don't seriously start until summer. Last year I started running again in January after a long break by doing c25k and by may i was able to run a half marathon with no problem. I followed the plan in one of John Bingham's books...either No Need for Speed or Marathoning for Mortals, I forget which one, but it is 3 days running and 2 days cross training, very doable. Great books! I also used Hal Higdon's plan for the Diva and I did 3 running/2 cross training days. The 2 running days during the week are shorter and you only need time to do a long run on the weekend.

Thanks everyone!! I think I'm going to go for it, after we move, that is! I'll continue with my 5 mile runs until then Can't tell DH yet, because he thinks I'm a lunatic for even considering a 10k
