Ok so when did you really give your DC peanut butter for the first time?
and did they have an allergic reaction to it? I'm trying to decide when to try peanut butter for DS. I think with Kiera we did it somewhere between 18-24 months and she is not allergic. Alexander is 15 months and I don't expect him to be allergic but of course there is always the concern. I know you are suppose to wait until 2 but I've also read that waiting might not be good either. Just curious as to if there is a correlation. Thanks!

With Ella, she was at least 1. Erik was about 10 months. Neither had a reaction.

DS was just shy of 2 (I can't even remember) and DD was 13 months. No reactions and it's their staple for lunch (PB&J).

DS will be 3 in a few weeks and JUST had peanut products for the first time a few weeks ago. He recently was tested (negative ) but I was still nervous since we have a history of allergies on both sides of the family

I don't think age matters too much. DS had a blood test that said he was NOT allergic to peanuts, so the doc told me to give him peanut butter. I gave him some at 18 months, and he had a reaction and IS allergic.

Re: Ok so when did you really give your DC peanut butter for the first time?
I "think" someone gave Kaydyn a chocolate peanut butter brownie on Memorial Day (my mom said she would feed her dessert and I was outside but she came outside with a piece of the brownie on her shirt). She was 16 months and she didn't have a reaction but I'm not sure if she actually ate it.
She is 19 months now and we might try it in a couple of weeks. She has become such a picky eater and if she likes PB and doesn't have a reaction then it would be easy for my MIL to feed her for lunch.

Sarah was over 2. No reaction.
Andy was around 1, but he was tested for food allergies at 10 months so I knew that he wasn't peanut allergic.

ITA Great advice about the benedryl. My DS is 22 months and we still have not given it to him My allergist recommended waiting until 3. My DS tested negative to peanut allergies, but there is still a chance you could be allergic even with a negative test. If we give it to him before 3 we are going to do it when we are actually at the allergist's office.

Re: Ok so when did you really give your DC peanut butter for the first time?
I'm waiting until 2 for a few reasons. Mainly because DH and I both have allergies (seasonal and pets), so there's a good chance DS will be allergic to some things also. And he has some trouble with gagging and textures from time to time, so I'm not so sure he can handle this yet.
The benadryl is a good suggestion. Our ped. said we should have it on hand when we started solid foods, and we have ever since. Never had to use it, luckily.

Re: Ok so when did you really give your DC peanut butter for the first time?
Thanks everyone for the great feedback. We don't have any allergies in our immediate family so I think I will go ahead and try it with DS. I had actually learned about the Benadryl from a friend of mine who's daughter has a peanut allergy. The first time she gave her peanut butter her daughter had an immediate reaction. She called the dr and they said either call 911 or get to your closest pharmacy and get benadryl. That will calm the allergy until you get to the hospital. So since then I always keep it on hand when my kids are trying something new.

With Ava, she was 2 and had an instant reaction.
When I take Brody for his 1 year old blood test next wweek, we will have him tested.

Before 12 months, no reaction.
There is no place to vote for that.

One of the mommies on here mentioned that putting peanut butter on a child's arm would cause an allergic reaction IF they were allergic, without having to feed it to the child. I did that with Bendryl on hand and got no reaction. Then I gave her peanut butter sandwich crackers and got no reaction. Then I went to straight on PB&J, again, no reaction.
