I would skip the "The" and just put Alexis. Tough call.

you're welcome. Technically The Alexis's is also grammatically correct, but most people find that it looks funny, so most prefer to do it as The Alexis' just looks better to the eye and is considered the "more" correct way to write it.

My maiden name ended in an "s" and this is how we did it.

From a safety/security point of view, would your friend want something displaying her last name on the outside of her home?

I know some people don't care about strangers and/or solicitors seeing their last name, but I've been spooked enough (at my own home by solicitors) where I won't put our last name out there. Instead we had mats made with our monogram.

Otherwise, on a mat, I would just use Alexis and not make it possessive.

Actually, this is incorrect, its a common mistake.
The s' is used for showing possession for noun, like "the students' books."
But showing possession for a name it is 's. So the grammaticaly correct spelling would be "The Alexis's"

Actually, unless you are implying that the Alexis family owns the residence that is incorrect.

If you are simply saying that their is more than one Alexis living in the home, then it is "the alexises". It is very cumbersome and I have the same problem, so I wrote "the jones family"

I agree with an above poster..
be careful - my Dad's house was robbed because he had his last name displayed on the front of the house. The robebr must have looked up their last name, got their phone number, called the house, and found they were not home Chat Icon

Alexis's is possessive, though, not plural. Which are you going for - plural or possessive?

ok I never thought about that I was also thinking about getting myself one too. I guess i will have to bring up the subject with my friend to get a feel on how she feels about it..

Thanks

True, it depends on if they want it plural or possessive.
It would be the Alexis's house.
But The Alexises if you just wanted the plural form.

I was going to mention that, too.

Personally, I'd never put my name anywhere outside my house. However, many people do it and don't have a problem with it. Get a feel for how your friend feels about it first.

How about just an initial "A" if security is a concern.
