OK, what would you do? UPDATE: I got the job!! SECOND UPDATE: I didn't take it...

I have been interviewing for a new job and think I may land one soon....

The problem is that they are in the city and I can't stand that commute, but would get used to it for the right job.

The job I interviewed for today seemed really good and has a lot of potential. It starts at the same pay I am getting now, but obviously I would take home less due to the commute.

Now throw in the fact that DH and I want to TTC soon and I am so confused I don't know what to do!!!! Chat Icon

I need to leave this job because I am on here all day and bored to tears, plus I am capped as far as pay goes.

I am looking for a job on LI, but NYC just has more to offer.

What would you do? Start a new job in the city and just wing it, or stay at your current so-so job, wait until a baby comes and then figure it out then?

What if I miss out on a great job opportunity?

Need advice badly...

ETA:

Now I have to decide what to do. The salary is the same, so essentially I would be taking a pay cut for a little while to compensate for the the commute.....

I explained to the HR woman that it's the same salary but now I have to commute, and she told me it was something I would have to figure out, so can I still negotiate? What would I say?

Second Update:

After thoughtful and painful consideration, I have decided to stay put and focus on TTC and starting a family. I just wanted to thank all of you for your support, advice and experiences, it means a lot that I can turn to you guys for this kind of advice.

Love,

Gina

Well.... I know the commute stinks but if there is opportunity for advancement- both in terms of money and knowledge- I would go w/ the NYC job.

Re: OK, what would you do?

I was in your situation about 2 years ago. I made the decision to go back to the city. I landed a great job, with a great boss and great pay. The commute blows frankly, but I had it with the crappy, low paying jobs I ran across.

I'm so glad I made the decision. I know I can have flexibility when it comes time for a baby too. That's the benefit of a great company with a great boss.

Re: OK, what would you do?

Having commuted into the city, I can't imagine doing it while PG or with a baby. Chat Icon I was exhausted all the time without being PG...I think I would stay at the current job.

Plus, it really is a pay cut when you factor in cost of train and subway....

I purposely avoided the city when looking for a job. I knew I was getting married that year and we would start TTCing pretty soon. I knew because of professional reasons, I would have to work so I wanted something close and something that would be flexible. I gave up a HUGE amount of earning potential for this reason. So, for me, I would look to what is going to work best for you.

I would take whatever job I felt held more potential (particularly if you plan to go back after you have kids).

As for the same pay, I would negotiate.

I'm in the city with 2 kids in daycare. I know I'm going to feel differently once afterschool actiivites start, but now I have the seniority of leaving early.

Re: OK, what would you do?

My advice to you would be to stay where you are and keep looking for the right job on LI. Especially since you are TTC. Once that baby arrives you are going to want to run home and working in the city is going to take so much time away from being with the baby.

If I were to be working in the city right now, I'd get home and Jake would be in bed for the night and I'd have to leave so early in the morning that I'd be gone just as he was getting up. That would suck and I wouldn't trade any amount of money being able to spend the very few hours a day I get to spend with him now. Basically I would only see him on the weekends.

Now that only applies if you plan to continue to work full-time after. If you plan to work in the city part time, then that wouldn't be so bad.

I wouldn't go work in the city for the same pay I'm getting now because like you said, with the commute & paying city taxes from your check, it's really a pay cut.

I would stay where you are for now... unless you were making $10k more or something significant to pay for the extra $ to commute.

Re: OK, what would you do?

I'm just worried that I won't even have my job if and when I decide to return, if I leave before 1 year....and I then have to start from scratch.

Obviously I am just speculating beacuse I don't know what this job will be like.....

Re: OK, what would you do?

I am currently in your EXACT same situation. I even stopped working so that I can concentrate on my job search, but I'm looking in LI now. I was working in the city, and with ttc and hoping it will happen in the next year, I don't think that I'd want to get home at almost 7 each night and find myself with no time for the baby. Even with a very helpful DH, I got home at 7 each night and most nights cooked, and then with cleanup, it;s almost 9. That left us no time together because of our early to bed time and I just can't imagine a baby in that mix.

That a being said, do what's best for you.

Re: OK, what would you do? UPDATE: I got the job!!

If they are not willing to negotiate right now, you can ask if you can have a performance review in a couple of months to discuss a merit based increase, once you have proven yourself.

ETA: Make sure you ask about additional benefits - I think some companies in the city have a program that somehow decreases the total cost of commuting - I think its taken out pre-tax?

I would not put anything on hold because of TTC. You can't have any idea how long it will take you, sometimes it happens right away and others...well it takes longer than expected. I would take the NYC job.

Good luck on your decision!

congrats!!! I don't know why they wouldn't give you a little more money to make you happy.

Can you talk to the person who would be your manager?

I would call your soon to be manager and say that you were hoping to move for a higher salary. Ask him/her if they can talk to the HR department and get it authorized. After all, for you it really matters. For them it might not matter as much. The HR department will only give you what they are instructed to give you. You may need to bring in the big guns. Be prepared with a number..

I don't want to piss off the HR Director, doesn't that seem like I'm going over her head?

Well, yes you are going over her head since she pretty much is not advocating for you.

Ok, you got the job, come work for us but too bad about the money issue..tough luck. That would be unacceptable to me.

How many times have you met with the manager?

I would DEFINITELY tell them that you are very interested and would accept the position, but not at the current salary.

Figure out your commute costs and a bit on top of that and TELL them what you would take it for.

I am a FIRM believer that you should always go INTO a job making what you think you should - instead of hoping that they will give you a raise later on. I'm in that situation now, where I accepted a position without a pay increase and have been stuck - even though it's an amazing job.

You need to get the job at a salary you are happy with now.

I met with both of them only once yesterday.

She did tell me the salary before I went on the interview...

Re: OK, what would you do? UPDATE: I got the job!!

Congrats Gina!! Chat Icon

I wish i could offer you advice... but i stink at this stuff... when i worked in NYC and I got my job offer, i remember the HR lady telling me the salary, and i said i had to think about it to make sure i could afford the commute and everything... she seemed disapointed and told me that she wished she could give me more, but that was already the most she was able to offer... and told me to let them know my decision asap... so i took it because i realized they werent able to budge...

maybe make a pro and con list?? What do you have to loose? If you take this job and hate it more than your current one, then you can always leave and figure something else out... everything happens for a reason and what is meant to be will be... career decisions are hard to make! especially moving from someplace you are comfortable to someplace new... Im babbling now... you will make the right choice... dont worry!!

To be honest, I think you made the right decision.

I've been in this spot before - and I truly believe that when something is "right" - you know it. If you have to convince YOURSELF, then it's not the right fit.

Don't worry, you did the right thing!
