okay, here is an OPK and BD timing question
Sorry if this makes no sense; it all confuses me still.
I was away for what MMC called the beginning of my fertile time. I got back the day they pegged me as O'ing. DH and I BD'd that night (very late) and sunday morning, I tried OPK (my first time ever). It was apparently CD 17 when I did it. my cycles are pretty regular.
I didn't get a smiley (didn't really expect to) but my question is - did I test too late? what CD do you normally start if you are regular? and let's say I missed my smiley - did we BD for nothing (besides fun and b/c he missed me ) or could I have been still O'ing? OH and I saw EWCM both that morning before and after we BD'd.
sorry I'm just clueless - the OPKs don't actually tell us we ovulated, just that we are about to, right?

Re: okay, here is an OPK and BD timing question
first off, how long is your cycle normally?
OPKs detect LH. in a normal person, LH is low, and then surges immediately before ovulation. at or around the actual time of ovulation, the LH then goes down again.
it is def POSSIBLE that you missed the window to get a smiley, but that doesnt mean the egg was gone. if you happen to have ovulated that day and then you def still could have caught the egg. its around for anywhere from 12-36 hours after ovulation. then if it doesnt get fertilized it dies and gets flushed out with AF.
good luck!!

Re: okay, here is an OPK and BD timing question
I think it's too difficult to determine if you were too late in BDing. I often get EWCM after I ovulate...sometimes a few days before, too. I use an OPK and temp...just to see if they both match up. I've only been using the OPK for 2 cycles, but both times they matched up. I got my temp. dip the same day I got a + on my OPK. Temping is the most accurate method out there, though.

MMC always underestimated when I would O. It's a computer program; it really has no way to predict it. It can "guess" based on the fact that many women O halfway through their cycles. But many don't. A woman with your cycle length can O on CD 13 or CD 18, and still be normal.
Use your body's cues instead. When do you start seeing EWCM? When do you want to BD the most?
If you want to use OPKs, I swore by the digitals. TTC gives you more than enough to obsess over; I didn't need to try and guess whether two lines matched. I had a 26-27 day cycle, and usually O'd on CD 13. I started testing around CD 10. I confirmed O with temping, and OPKs were usually able to predict it 1 day in advance.
GOOD LUCK!!!
