Re: ok..Italians out there- the red "stuff" you put on pasta,
it is sauce. I used to work at an Italian restaurant.
When my regular customers would ask, "can I get extra gravy?" I would ask, "so, do you want white clam gravy or vodka gravy?"
We'd have a good laugh about it

Re: ok..Italians out there- the red "stuff" you put on pasta,
It depends. IE: If there is meat in it...then it is gravy, if it is a quick marinara...tomatoes only kind of thing, then it is a sauce
ETA: it also depends on what part of Italy you are from.

My grandmother switches it up I think she grew up with gravy, but then after years of coaxing switched to sauce. Occasionally 'gravy' will slip out.

SAUCE
i HATE when people call it GRAVY

not in certain Italian families...i call it GRAVY because that what my Italian grandmother called it and we lived with her..
GRAVY GRAVY GRAVY !!!
I think the old school italians call it 'gravy'. My grandmother and her sisters always called it gravy. But my mom, who is Irish, called it sauce. Thank god she learned how to cook from my dad's mom & grandma, and cooks awesome italian. But depending on the company we call it either, but tend to use 'sauce' more.

We call normal red sauce "sauce" but if it has meat in it like meatballs and sausage we call it gravy.

We always used to say gravy, but it's sort of morphed into sauce. I think it does totally depend on where in Italy your family's from too. Like someone mentioned, their Sicilian relatives called it gravy - my family was most southern Italian and sicilian.

I lived with my grandmother grwoing up so it was "gravy" every sunday.. we didnt know it any other way and I can't change now.
I agree with one of the above posts. If I am making a crushed tomatoe/garlic/oil its sauce...

Re: ok..Italians out there- the red "stuff" you put on pasta,
My German family calls it sauce.....but Tom's Italian family is split....some gracy people, some sauce people. They believe that if it somes from meat, or has meat in it - it's gravy. if it's all vegetable, it's sauce.
I call it gravy sometimes to bug DH though
