OMG a debt collector just called my co-worker at work!
She wasn't in today but they called and said "this is a debt collection agency looking for X" that is so horrible!
I understand if you owe money you get called but I would never think it would be at work.

if you got a name tell her, it was third party disclosure and its illegal. You are not allowed to divulge credit card debt to someone else. They can be sued.

Wow... MAJOR no-no by the debt collector.
That is an easy lawsuit. She can probably get the debt wiped clean for that screw-up.

Re: OMG a debt collector just called my co-worker at work!
Oh yes - at my old job my co-worker used to get these calls ALL THE TIME. He never paid any of his bills - eventually got his car repossessed, etc. - and they called him daily. Instead of dealing with it, he would get irate and yell - but we shared a cubicle wall and it only made me angry, not sympathetic at all.
After he left the job, when they started calling his replacement daily, we tracked down his new phone number at his new job and gave it out to any debt collectors who called. Not our problem! Why should we have to deal with the annoying calls?
ETA that they never identified themselves and gave out his info ... but they all called asking for his legal name, which he never used.
I didn't know that was illegal though. If he provided the CC company with the number, aren't they able to use that number to get in touch with the person?

Re: OMG a debt collector just called my co-worker at work!
yeah it violated the FDCPA when they said it was a debt collector. They are allowed to call your place of employment unless you tell them no but they can never say it is about a debt

Re: OMG a debt collector just called my co-worker at work!
i told her she said she is going to put a complaint in but she said its her own fault for not paying a student loan from 10 years ago that she has been avoiding. I kinda have to respect she is owning up to it.

Re: OMG a debt collector just called my co-worker at work!
they can and do call at work. so long as they have the number on their files.
BUT They should not be stating who they are!!! that's ridiculous!!! and embarrasing.
Don't tell anyone else at work... for this co-workers sake. Just let the coworker know they called and that you will not be telling anyone else. That's soo embarrasing and wrong of them to state who they are.

Yes, they can call. BUT THEY CANNOT STATE THE REASON FOR THE CALL.. they can't say they are a debt collector... or who he owes money to, or how much he owes, etc. There are privacy polices in place to protect people of this. The person could potentially sue the company for that.
there are other laws surrounding debt collectors too (the times of day they can call, etc). I would suggest to the OP - have your coworker brush up on them... and get a copy of their privacy policy.
