OMG Fleas...talk me down!

My cat has fleas for the first time and I am in a complete blind panic about the whole thing. I saw my first flea about a week ago, treated the house and see a few dead fleas and a few live fleas around, not too many...but I am so thoroughly skeeved and can't help thinking about the bubonic plague. Seriously. The Black Death. I am NUTS.

Someone tell me they will go away! Its only been a week but the thought of these little bastards on my children makes me want to die. Talk me down!

Please! Ugh. Thanks.

Have you tried the Victor Ultimate Flea Trap by any chance? That thing pretty much works instantaneously.

Re: OMG Fleas...talk me down!

THey will go away. Just keep vacuuming alot andwashing your pet's bedding. You applied Frontline, and let it do it's job. It takes a while to work b/c you already have flea eggs and larva in your home, so they need to become adult fleas and get on the pet, where they will then die.

DO NOT go overboard with flea products. You can make your cat sick. No flea baths, etc. Don't reapply Frontline until about a month is up. You WILL see live fleas b/c new fleas hatch before they have a chance to be killed by the medcine on your pet.

If you really want, keep checking your pet and use a flea comb to capture the live fleas. Or a peice of tape. Then you drown them in soapy water.

Thanks so much!!! My cat never had a bad until this week, he just sleeps everywhere, so I am trying to vacuum and flea treat everything. The thought of them on my kids makes me feel crazy, I appreciate the talk down.

It will be OK. You will get rid of them.
If the frontline doesnt work try advantage. Frontline stopped working for us and after using advantage they were gone in a week!

Thanks...just wondering, this is a good opportunity to get that new area rug in the living room I have wanted for age, this old one can go to the dump now. Should I wait until the fles seem gone or do it now? Thanks, I do keep seeing fleas, I brushed my cat this morning with a a flea comb and he seems pretty clean, only saw one flea. Hopefully this nightmare should be over soon!

OMG Fleas...talk me down!

I am on the ledge too. We just found fleas on my dog and I am in a complete panic.

More so cause my 8 month old DS has what we think are flea bites on his ankle.

We gave the dog a bath and brushed his and then put on frontline but Other than cleanign everything I am not sure what to do.

Drown that flea in soapy water. Swish the comb around in a clear cup with soapy sudsy water and watch the fleas drown and sink.

And yes, get rid of the rug NOW. Dont leave it in your garage, etc, throw it right out asap. And do not buy another one until this is very very over.

Thanks Goobster! In your infinite wisdom, do you think I need to treat my bedroom, it has all hardwood floors?

Go to the vet. They will give you a one time pill that will kill the fleas within 24hrs. Then use frontline for the next month or so. We have 4 cats and a dog and I made the mistake of trying to do everything but go to the vet. They have had fleas once and I've had pets for 12yrs.

The bath thing doesn't kill them all especially if they are in the house.

I personally would not use anything on any part of my home that has poison, toxins, etc. The main thing is vacuuming, and disposing of the bag outside asap! If you have bagless, dump it into a large garbage bag and put it right out...dont leave possible live fleas in your vacuum. They can jump back out.

If you wash everything, flea comb your pet and use Frontline, you WILL break the cycle. Frontline kills 3 stages of the flea, so in a month or two you should see a huge improvement that eventually dwindles down to no fleas anymore.

Another poster said something baout a pill. Talk to your vet about that. At the time my family had the flea infestation, these things did not exist. I have found fleas on my dog at least 5 times in 8 years but never got an infestation due to using the Frontline.

Re: OMG Fleas...talk me down!

My dog had fleas recently and she had frontline on her!! We called the vet and they told us that fleas are developing an immunity to it and to use vectra, apparently he said frontline hasn't been effective for fleas in the Florida area for a while now and now northern areas are reporting it too. I feel like its true because we never missed a dose this year and she got fleas!! We are hopeful the vectra works, so far so good....

Inside cats CAN get fleas on rare occasions, but have a higher chance of getting fleas if you also have a dog who goes out. Fleas could come in on the dog and get on the cats.

So it's about two weeks later and we seem to and gotten rid of the fleas, I acted very aggressively and I am glad I did so! I am finding dead fleas around the house, like in the cats bed, and I am not getting big at all, we thank goodness. The cat has been treated with something called Advocate, hopefully that should work!
