omg i had "the talk" with my 10 year old ds..

ugh G'd it was so bad, every minute of it..but i had to do it, cause i mean, hes almost 11, and his friends MUST be talking about it...they all have girls they "like" and stuff, and i was so worried someone would give him the wrong info on things, and maybe just maybe my lil innocent kid isnt as innocent as i think he is..
i remember about 6 months ago when i was still PG asking him if he knew what sex was..and he said "uh no" (we were making the bed, casual morning conversation lol) and then i said, hoping for only one answer.."do you want to know?"...and he said,.."omg ugh no way ma!!"
and i was so happy...
geez how did 6 months turn him into a kid thaT WANTED to know?!!?

anyway, i thought for sure he had a *clue* what sex was...i thought for sure, they probably all have dumb half wrong half right conversations about it...

BOY WAS I WRONG.....

oh, g'd...he didnt know ANYTHING..i mean he knows what a vagina is, his sister has one lol..but like he had NO CLUE what goes on with any of it..and when i had to tell him (thank you very much Parents magazine march issue for making me feel like i waited way too long to do this) he literally covered his ears, and shoved his head into his pillow and screamed "omg are you serious?!!?!?..ewwww"

half of me wanted to vomit while talking about it, half of me was sad he was this old that i had to do it..
this is hard...G'd i thought its supposed to get easier!!!

well anyway, i NEVER wanna do that again and i hope by then my mother will have "the talk" with my dd..cause that was PAINFULLLLLLLLL Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: i just wanna point out that i only did this because parenting magazine scared me into realizing that one day soon he could want to experiment, and what if something terrible happened?!?! Making a baby? diseases? they scared the hell outta me!! lol

Re: omg i had "the talk" with my 10 year old ds..

Working in an elementary school- I can tell you that our 4th and 5th graders most definitely have a warped view of what sex is. I wish more parents would have *the talk* earlier. Considering that 1st and 2nd graders are using terms like, "hot" and "sexy", I believe the earlier the better.....

Kudos to you for giving your son a proper talk about sex.!Chat Icon

They were actually taliking about this on Z100 one morening last week and they said the right age to have"the talk" was around 10. A middle school teacher called in and said her kids were indeed having sex and oral sex. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: omg i had "the talk" with my 10 year old ds..

Good for you! Painful as I can imagine it was. My DS is 6 1/2 so I guess the convo is coming in a few years here. In a way I'd be glad he didn't know anything...I hate the idea of them being so much older so young nowadays so at least you know it's not a main conversation he's having with his friends and he got his first info from you. My one niece is 10 yrs old too and my SIL said that she told her at a sleepover all the girls were talking about how you "do it" - in depth conversation!! My SIL was freaked out that this is what the 10yr old girls are talking about.

Wow, this is all pretty eye opening... My DS is only 10 MONTHS old, but I had no idea kids were so aware so young. I never got the 'talk' as a kid...

Re: omg i had "the talk" with my 10 year old ds..

Sadly- they're getting younger and younger. At a local middle school there was a big drama when some middle schoolers (7th grade) were found having sex in a bathroom. In another incident, a fifth grader was found with provacative pics of herself on a MySpace account.

Just last week we had to have a *talk* with 5th grade about using words like "slvt" and "wh0re".Chat Icon

And I work in an *affluent* district- these are supposedly "nice" kids from "good" families.

I know a middle school teacher that told me the same thing.

I think you did the right thing. Either he hears it from you or a kid who doesn't have his info right. I'm dreading it as I only have a few more years.

OMG I'm sure it was hard for you! but you did it! Chat Icon

This conversation makes my hard beats faster, specially after hearing the comments of what people have seen and heard about some young children. I don't want to be one of those parents that gets surprised about what their child knows or think they know. DD is 12 y/o and it is extremely difficult for me to have any kind of related conversation. I asked her what have she learned in health class and from other kids and she does not like talking about it much, It's really not much that we have talked about this, but I always tell her and try to remind her to trust me, and to come back to me with any questions tha may come up...I just hope I am able to get across the right message.

Well that is wonderful. I never got the talk. My DH had to talk to his son when he was about the same age as your son. It wasn't easy for him either but he did it while driving in his mustang, his stress reliever I guessChat Icon I think it is very important because as sad as it is, kids start really young these days. My DD is 9. I plan to give her the talk in 2 years if I feel the need for it sooner, I will. Right now she is very immature and innocent. I don't think she would understnad at this point. It would go in one ear out the other. I want to do it when she is a little more mature.

WOw! I am totally impressed!

I think you did the right thing and not wait too much longer. He may have heard some things other then what he was revealing and was probably extremely embarassed but you totally broke the ice. Even if he didn't know anything he should because it may only be 6 more months that he hears about sex in school and now he knows the truth!

Good Job!!
