omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
A few months back I had a miscarraige and a botched D&C - I had a lot of problems with my OBGYN blowing me off and mistreating me so I decided to change practices.
Well today I get a letter from my old OBGYN stating I owe them $41.25 since they charge .75 cents per page to release my records....
I have never heard of such a thing - is this normal????

Unfortunately, they are allowed to charge a fee for photocopying their records. I think it used to be $.25 per page back when I dealt with medical records but that was more than 10 years ago.

Unfortunately, yes that's standard practice for a lot of medical offices.
My mother needed records pulled for her disability case and she had to pay the fees as well.
Sorry

Do you already have your copied records? Or are they telling you that is how muchthey are billing you for them?

Re: omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
I guess I am so mad because they mistreated me and so I am basically forced to leave the practice...its like rubbing salt in the wounds!

Re: omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
Yes, that is normal. However, most doctors as a courtesy, don't charge former patients. Especially when they screw up.
If I were you, I would just ignore it.
But you can write a letter to the office explaining you left their care because of sub-standard medical care and since you have not filed a claim for malpractice or gone to the media about them, could they waive the $41?

I can see your point. Think of it as the best $41 you ever spent.

If they photocopie then they could charge you but if they fax it to your doctor they cant.

My Dr. left his practice to go to a new one. I followed him. I wanted my records and yes, unfortunatley they can charge you.

Wow.
Seriously just be happy you are no longer with that practice.
They CAN charge you but in this case, they really shouldn't. I'd do what Shelly suggests

Unfortunately they can charge up to .75 cents a page - but many dr's won't do that if the records are going to another dr. I would take Shelly's suggestion.

Re: omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
Yup. I spend a lot of my day getting medical records for my job and they can charge up to a max of .75 a page.

Re: omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
That is standard but if the records are being sent directly to another doctor, some offices will copy them as a courtesy. Otherwise, it is rare to find a doctor that does not charge 75 cents a page.

I agree too. I've heard of charging. When I moved OOS, my OB didn't charge me. That is just so wrong that they are trying to get money out of you after what they did.

Yeah, but if they s uck so bad, they aren't going to care b/c if you sue them for malpractice, your lawyer would need the records and they'd chard the lawfirm and then the law firm charges you.

Re: omg I am FUMING - has anyone ever heard of this?
I had to pay my GP 20 cents per page to get my records copied to another doctor. I thought it was a scam and asked a friend who is a lawyer and he confirmed it's legit.
