She is just another person blessed with amazing talent, who tossed it away.
"But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime."
Really is anyone surprised? I thought this would have come a lot sooner after the Dianne Sawyer interview. Sorry, I don't think her death is a tragedy, her life was. You're entitled to your opinion but I find your comments very harsh. No one knows how she died yet and IF she died due to drugs NO ONE knows what kind of demons she was dealing with. Regardless how she died....a child lost her mother and a mother lost her daughter. I really hates these comments after someone dies because of drugs or alcohol. I guess "we" should be considered lucky that we have never loved someone who suffered from addiction...or heaven forbid suffered from it ourselves.
I agree L. I am always shocked by the insensitivity that is shown when somebody DIES. She obviously touched many people with her incredible voice and like you said she was a Mom/Daughter..a person!! Her poor daughter. May she RIP.

So sad. I'm not shocked, but what a tragedy.
This. I feel for her family.

I'm so sad about this.
This is an unforgettable voice.
Addiction is an awful thing.
ETA after reading this thread: Just because this doesn't shock some people doesn't mean this isn't horribly sad.

So very tragic and sad. I just heard on CNN that Jennifer Hudson will be singing in tribute to her at tonight's Grammys.

Lisa, thank you for saying what you did.
What happened to Whitney breaks my heart and the pain that her daughter is going through is a pain I know all too well. Losing someone to addiction is terrible and no one understands it or can relate to it unless you have dealt with it in your own life in some way or another.
RIP Whitney...your music was an inspiration to me and I will always remember dancing in my room to "I wanna dance with somebody" and crying when I heard you sing "I Will Always Love You"

I hope her daughter has people to lean on and help her. I am not surprised, but as others have said, it's very sad. Addiction is an illness. I was in 8th grade or so when she first hit it big and I never would have thought things would have gone as they did for her.

its a shame she may not be remembered for her music...people will remember her addication. regardless of how she died, a girl lost her other, a woman lost her daughter, a woman lost her goddaughter and friends will all be sad. may she now rest in peace

I get annoyed by these comments too. Unless you can honestly say you've NEVER made a mistake or poor decision in your life, then I don't think anyone should make comments like that. My friends and I did drugs when we were younger. THANKS BE TO GOD that we never got addicted or died. THANKS BE TO GOD that we were able to grow up, walk away and chalk it up to an experience and go on to lead normal, productive adult lives. Not everybody is that lucky or that strong. The struggles she endured were very sad and a shame...but to call her life a tragedy is over the top.
also, A person could turn their life around and live clean for years and still die due to stress created from previous drug use.

So uncalled for. My blood boils when people start talking nasty about the deceased. May you never have to live the same life of "tragedy" that fame seems to bring with it.

Well said!! People can be so insensitive. At the end of the day a daughter lost her mom and a mother lost her daughter.
