On the nanny search again...
We fired our last nanny about 2 weeks ago.
We started our kids at an in-home daycare this morning.
I can't place why exactly...but I felt like the scum of the earth leaving them there. It didn't feel right. It didn't feel like the right decision.
so, here I go...using my 2nd and final personal day (a.k.a. "mental health day") to try to find my kids a competent nanny.
I hate this.

We're in NC. I know I would have so many leads if we were still on LI.

Re: On the nanny search again...
Thanks everybody.
I *thought* I was ok with the in-home daycare. But you know that "mommy gut feeling" you get sometimes? When you know something is not right, but can't place what, or why? I left them there today and I just lost it.
I feel extremely guilty that we can't afford to send them BOTH to the daycare that we used for Ryleigh when she was an infant (and that she still goes to 2 mornings per week). It's such a stellar place, but for me to send both my kids there, it wouldn't make much sense for me to be working.
There are a few things about the in-home daycare that bother me:
1. She is not licensed. 2. She smokes (never in the house, and has sworn to me up and down that she doesn't smoke at all when the kids are around, even outside...whether I believe that is a different story). 3. Her husband works nights and helps her with the kids. Call me a neurotic lunatic, but all I can think to myself is, I don't know this man, and he's sometimes alone with my little girl. It makes me sick just to think about it. 4. Today I dropped the kids off and she sounded as though she was hacking up a lung. I asked her, "Are you sick?" and she said, "Yeah, I caught a little something over the weekend, I'll be alright though". I hesitated to leave them there...but I did...and when I came back, I saw her reach into one of the kids' mouths with her bare (germ-infested) hand to get sand out of his mouth.
The price is certainly right...but I keep thinking to myself...what is the REAL cost?
So...that's where we're at. On the upside, when I went to pick up the kids this afternoon, Ryleigh was running around in the backyard w/ the other kids, having a great time. And she threw a huge temper-tantrum when I told her it was time to leave...so I think to myself, she must be doing SOMETHING right if my DD is reacting like that on her first day...
I think I will check out care.com. Does anyone know how much it costs to contact caregivers through the site? I couldn't find that information on there.

We would love to, but I hear the start-up cost is astronomical?
My sister has used Cultural Care Au Pair. She had an ok experience, but when we contacted them, they told us there was a $7000 startup cost

Re: On the nanny search again...
No license, smoking, and a stranger of a husband with no background checks that is probably running on empty helping out with the kids....I think I would be running from that place as fast as I could! Sorry, but I would not be comfortable with what you described. I hope you can find something else asap!

We did do complete background checks on both of them. They both came back 100% clean.
I don't know...something about it just doesn't feel right to me...

Well the teenagers would have sent me running. Then add to that a smoker (gross, gross, gross) and her DH helping with the kids. You did the right thing. Mommy gut is always best to follow.

We haven't pulled them out yet. They are due to go back again tomorrow.
We just don't have any other options right now. My (68 year-old) mother just watched them for the last week and she is exhausted...

Sorry it didn't work out - hopefully you can find a new nanny quickly! It's stressful I'm sure.
