On the subject of Toddler beds, when did you know it was the right time for the bed?
Juliette is 24 months. She has been in the crib since whe was 13 days old. She has never tried to climb out, she is pretty short and only a head above the bar, she hangs out there for about 30 minutes in the morning talking and singing to herself until I finally hear, "Mommy-come get me now!!!!"...
She understands that Juliette sleeps in HER crib and Mommy and Daddy sleep in THEIR bed. She is such a restless sleeper, I am so afraid of letting her sleep in the toddler bed.
How old was your DC when you made the transition? I need the crib for #2!

We put Jared in a big boy bed ( a full size bed) when he fell out of his crib about 3 months ago. Around 18-19 months?

Andrew also never climb out of his crib, and I think that if #2 never came along, he'd probably still be in it!
With #2 coming though, we set up his room and got him a toddler bed, while keeping the crib in the nursery. Before the baby came, he would nap in the bed and sleep at night in the crib. It was the easiest way to get him used to his bed. When #2 came, we had her in the bassinet in our room. That's when we started to put him to sleep in his bed and night and surprisingly, it went well. The whole process we started at 22 months, and by the time he was 26 months, he was in his bed full time.

Re: On the subject of Toddler beds, when did you know it was the right time for the bed?
I think it depends. If you need the crib for #2 then you need to begin a transition. My DD just turned 3 and has NO intention of giving up her crib. She climbed out once, fell, and I guess was scared enough to never try it again. Everytime I bring up the subject of getting a bed she says she wants to keep her crib.
She is fully day potty trained and in order for night potty training to work she needs to be out of the crib. I will set up her bed in the summer and hopefully make a smooth transition.

I plan on getting Roman a toddler bed within the next month or so. I hope to transition him for naps at first since I will not be buying another crib when #2 comes along. He is 14 months now.

Re: On the subject of Toddler beds, when did you know it was the right time for the bed?
My son was 21 months when we switched him to a twin sized bed. His first leap out of the crib was at 15 months, stopped and then at 20 months he started again and we knew it was time - I would find him like this after naps on the floor with his "friends". He stayed in his bed from day one, He LOVED it! In the beginning sometimes DH would wait in his room til he fell asleep.
and the big boy bed

If she's happy in the crib I wouldn't mess with it. The newborn can sleep in a bassinet or pack n play until the crib is available.

Jack was in a toddler bed at 19 months only becasue he tried to get out of the crib and fell and traumatized himself. I have a friend whose son will be 3 in June and has no issues with getting out of the crib, so he is still in it.

Yeah, I know...I went from a twin size all my life to a queen when I got married. Daddy works for Sleepys, so he got him a great bed at a great deal.

Re: On the subject of Toddler beds, when did you know it was the right time for the bed?
We just got a Queen after we bought the house, we could barely fit the double in our teenie tiny apartment we had when we first got married!
There is absolutely no way we can fit a twin and a crib in her current bedroom, so once we move her upstairs or buy a bigger home, she will be able to have a full.
