On the topic of stealing someone's "thunder"
I was thinking what was said about stealing "thunder" ... it doesn't bother me if something wonderful happens to me and to another close person as well. I don't mind sharing the spotlight at all. For example... I get engaged and shortly after 3 of my close friends that were in my bridal party all got pregnant. Sooo happy for them.
I announced I was prego at a family party and a week later at another family thing someone else announced they were... Loved sharing prego stories with her.
Oh, unless the person does it to be spiteful. Then it's not right.
Anyway... I can't stand ONE-UPPERS.
For instance... telling a story... I got drunk last night and then you hear "Oh, You think you were drunk... I got WASTED and blah blah"
I got a cold coming on... "You think you have a cold... I was sooo sick... blah blah"

completely agree with you on one-uppers
depending on the person, I sometimes get the impression that they dont realize that they are doing it and they are just trying to be part of group or whatever

I think my thunder stealer is a one-upper as well! Both have similar characteristics

Re: On the topic of stealing someone's "thunder"
I cannot stand one-uppers. I don't know too many. But I have a friend (that I'm really not close to anymore) that continually has to one-up me in just about everything. When I mentioned I bought my house (and how small it was), this person mentioned how they built a brand new house with all new appliances, granite countertops, etc. This friend has a daughter about 6 months older than my DS. So every time I mention DS said friend will mention how much more their DD is doing. It's gotten to a point where I really can't talk to them anymore. I am not a competitive person and these kind of conversations just make me cringe.

Re: On the topic of stealing someone's "thunder"
I find that the one uppers get worse with age. I am in my early 40s and I'm actually dumping a few friends that I have had for years because I am so tired of it. I really thought that as we all establsihed careers, people would attain more confidence and stop such behavior. I was wrong about that. PS. It exists with both family and friends, unfortunately.

Re: On the topic of stealing someone's "thunder"
i know someone who is the ultimate one-upper -- no matter what you have done, said, or seen---they have done, said and seen it MORE !
its beyond annoying. those kinds of people just seem utterly insecure and have to try and be at the top of the heap.

you think you hate one uppers well let me tell you...
This I must admit I do! People tell me all the time about all the "keeping up with the Joneses" types and then I go into, "well let me tell you about what so and so always does in that regard."

Re: On the topic of stealing someone's "thunder"
I can be a '1-upper' sometimes. I don't MEAN to be.. but I know I have done it. It is (for me) borne from a desire to contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way - NOT really to say "MY situation was so much better/worse than yours."
A friend of mine was talking about how she felt like she had a black cloud around her and proceeded to tell me how over the last 5 years she had all these things happen - divorce, miscarriage, sickness, granmother dying. I was like "I know how you feel - from 2000 - 2005 I lost my godmother, my dad, my sister and my mother, had 2 miscarriages, went through 3 jobs, had 5 surgeries and gained a god awful amount of weight.." Almost as SOON as it came out of my mouth I realized that I sounded like I was downplaying HER situation - which was never my intent. Of course my subsequent attempts to correct myself were just a disaster and I felt like a douche.
Anyway.. I guess I try to discern if the person is REALLY trying to be a 1-upper or if they are just socially retarded like me before I get TOO annoyed.

Awe... I can totally see that. I've done the same thing then caught myself doing it. I guess I'm socially retarded too. I think I'm contributing to the conversation, but then I start to sound like a one-upper. That's when I stop myself and listen to the person talking.
