One more...how does enrollment into kindergarten work (age wise)?

Thinking ahead, as we are looking to move.

What age does the child have to be to enroll in K, how does that work?

thanks

It depends on the district. Where I live, in Suffolk, the cutoff is Dec. 1st birthday. So, if your child is born by 12/1, she can go to Kindergarten when she is 5 years old. You also have the option to hold your child to 6 years old if you feel it would benefit him/her, ie. DD was born in late November. For me, DD#1 was born Oct 2008 and DD#2 was born Dec 2009. So DD#1 will be 5 and DD#2 will be 6 when starting Kindergarten. They will be 2 years apart in school since DD#2 missed the cutoff. HTH! Chat Icon

Hmm, why am I still confused? The cutoff is Dec 1, I know that. DD was born in Nov so I make the cutoff. So what age will she be when she is allowed first enroll?

Would DD be starting that school year as a 4 year old then turn 5 in Nov?
thanks, I dont know why I am so confused!

They can start in september at 4 yrs old as long as they will turn 5 before the cut off date.

This is correct. It will be the same for my DD. She will be 4 when she starts and will turn 5 in the beginning of the school year. If her birthday was in January or later however, we would have to wait until the following year (enrolling when she's 5).

My DD will start kindergarten when she is 4 and will turn 5 in November. Check whatever district you move to for when the kindergarten registration is (usually in March-May depending on the district) I called and set up a date for screening and it goes from there.
