I don't have a pool, but I just saw an article about pool alarms in Good Housekeeping this morning. ( July, p. 83)
One Step Ahead wasn't tested, but They liked MG International Swim Alert best. Here is the online version--it includes a few other tests ( gate alarms & wrist devices)
