Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
Looking for all types of opinions here...those in HR and those that have taken either version. I was once told that hiring managers think less of on online degree (but that was also about 4 or 5 years ago, has train of thought/technology changed?) Also, if you receive a Masters from a school that offers online but also has a physical location are you obligated to specify on your resume that you received your degree online?

I'm almost positive that you don't have to specify this. I mean, many courses have different formats, but still stick to the same curriculum. I'm def not an expert in the area, but I'm pretty sure that you dont need to specify it.
I took online courses back when i got my bachelors, and actually took 2 this summer, and I know that we wouldn't have to note that some of our courses are online, so I don't see any difference if the whole program is like that.
that being said, HOLY CRAP! online courses are SOOOO much work!!! I like the flexibility and being able to work from home, but seriously, i never did so much work as i did for those!!!

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I was thinking it might be as it is a masters in 18 (i think) months. I got a wierd kind of job opp but not really. The school I worked at is starting an online masters in October. Yesterday I had lunch with a friend who happens to the COO. We were joking around about when I am coming back to work and I said I need something I can do from home at 3am. He said take the online master program and you can go thru it with fresh eyes as a student, tell us what works, what doesn't, technical glitches etc. I'm still trying to make out whats what from this

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
that sounds like a great opportunity!!
Most programs now offer traditional and Online versions (I know USB has the same nurse practitioner program offered both on campus and online- and graduates don't need to specify which they took). The thing that matters most is knowing that its a credentialed and reputable school... but you wouldn't even have to worry about that part since you already (obviously ) have first hand experience with them.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
online is the way to go (i've taken undgergrad courses and loved it)
as for the techincal name of the school, some people may put 2 and 2 together(university of phoenix and you live in FL) Yes, UOP has a big, phyiscal shool, its more known for online. you simply tell them the truth if ask. it really should make no difference as its becomeing more normal to take online courses and they are all acredited schools

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I did most of my Master's throught the online program at stonybrook. It was awesome, but I agree with Neenie.. SO much work. I think since your not **sitting** in the class, they have to make up for it with other things.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I did my master's online and I now teach online college courses. My school has a physical campus and does not specify on the transcript that the course was online, so no one would ever know. Colleges like U Phoenix everyone knows are online. Some people do still look at them differently and feel you don't get the same experience. I think unless you are looking to join a super competitive organization it won't make any difference.
In some ways it was more work (more written assignments since you can't prove that you are physically there for lectures), but I enjoyed it much more than sitting in class. I enjoy teaching college classes much more online than in person because I don't have to worry about disruptive students and just in general people being a PITA.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I am taking my masters online. I "attend" the same lectures as the inclass students - they are recorded and put online for me to view. I complete the same assignments as the in-class students. It is an accredited program and well respected school for this major in my industry. It is basically the same education as the in-class students and it is not specified that the degree was taken online. It is obvious though since I live/work on LI and this school is in Cincinnati. Many people are under the impression that online = easy, but this is not the case at all. Like I said it is the same work as the in-class students and requires a lot of self discipline. The positives are flexibility with time. I view many of my lectures during my lunch hour at work to save me time at home. I think you should go for it

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
DH is doing on online Masters thru Marist college. (Poughkeepsie is a bit of a commute from LI)
I really don't know if you're obligated to state on a resume that the degree was earned online. If you're a matriculating student, then I guess it shouldn't matter.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
my DH is almost done with his masters in accountancy from SUNY Technology/Utica/Rome.
His classes are hard and a lot of work.
His degree won't say online on it.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I don't know if you have to state outright that you received your Masters online...but I'm almost positive it will state that somewhere on your transcript--which some employers will ask to see.

It doesn't state on the transcript that the classes were online. in 99% of cases at least--I worked in Admissions and have seen thousands of transcripts.

Re: Online Masters v. Traditional Masters
I did both of my Masters programs in a combination of in class and online courses. I liked the online courses better because you weren't stuck in a classroom for 3 hours. You could do it when you had time and at your pace.
