Opening a checking account
I recently opened a checking account at Chase and when reading through everything at home, I realized that they charge you $6.00 a month if you don't take out money 5 times.
I'm ready to go back to Chase and close out the account.
Does anyone have a checking account at a bank where there are no fees at all?
TIA!

Re: Opening a checking account
We don't pay anything at bank of america. I believe you have to keep $1,500 in the account in order to avoid fees? not sure, I usually keep more than that just to make sure we can cover our bills.
I used to use commerce which is now TD, they had no fees too.
Most banks do require a minimum, you can look online and see what it is before they charge a fee.

Re: Opening a checking account
I have a free Chase Checking acct and that has never happened to us. We rarely ever take money out, I am the queen of DEBIT! LOL! Did you do the basic free Chase Checking, that's what we have

Re: Opening a checking account
I don't have direct depositing so they charge me 6 dollars for the month if I don't take out money 5 times. I think that's so stupid.
I'm going to be switching ASAP.

TD now requires a minimum of $100 in a checking account. If you go under even by 5 cents (trust me I know this firsthand) they charge you $15.00 !!!
There way of depositing checks has changed too - payroll checks aren't available right away, deposits don't always trump withdrawels when done the same day.
Best of all - when you use your credit/debit card USUALLY you are declined when you don't have enough of an available balance. Now they have started a $400 overdraft (I believe) that you are charged $30 if you go into. I personally would rather be declined in a store !
I am looking to switch out of TD - probably to Bethpage Credit union - just as soon as they are done building the one by me !
Good luck with your search !!

Re: Opening a checking account
if i keep at least $100 in the account at Astoria then it does not get charged. I switched out of TD after the issues and the new information they sent sounded like fees were coming. they were only going to waive fees with $100 for a few months.

Re: Opening a checking account
How are they defining "take money out"? If you pay 5 bills either on line or via check would they count towards that minimum? The 5 times may not be an issue if it means you can take cash out of the ATM or use the debit card at the supermarket or write a few checks to pay bills.

alot of banks do the overdraft instead of declined. my fee was 36 dollars
and 100 min is GOOD.. my bank (astoria federal) charges a 10 dollar fee when I dip below 500...
i like it though b/c I always keep above that amount just NOT to get charged a fee... keeps my nose cleaned/
for the OP- maybe you might want a savings acct.
I have money in www.dollarsavingsdirect.com and can transfer money to my checking acct within one business day... ALL ONLINE
