Opening gifts at parties

We are having a 1st birthday party for DD at a restaurant. I'd like to open the gifts with some family members there. Do you think it's okay to wait until most people leave and then open the gifts up with the remaining family and friends there at the very end of the party?

We are having DS's party at a restaurant to with immediate family and I know that a few people are going to bring him gifts. I am going to open them up in front of everyone.

Yeah thats fine, I usually wait till everyone leaves the party, then my parents, my sister and my IL's will stay a little later and watch us open the gifts.

Re: Opening gifts at parties

It's fine...

I had DS's 1st birthday party in my parents backyard. We opened the gifts the next at my mom's house. Too much confusion around so I did it the next day where it was more quiet and can really enjoy taking my time helping DS open his presents...

Yeah I don't want to wait to open till the next day because I want my family to be there to see it - and they live too far away to come back.
Thanks - anyone else?

I think it is fine. I think if you're having a party at a restaurant it is too hectic to open the gifts with everybody there, and I don't think people really expect you to. I brought all the gifts home and then opened them with my immediate family (my sisters, nice & nephew and us).
