I always mean to put my phone on silent before I go to bed but sometimes I forget. I do not keep my phone on silent during the day because I like to know when I get a text or call etc.
Do you have an iwatch? Or even a Fitbit? They will alert you of a call. My phone is almost never on ring unless I am actively waiting for a call (dr or something) but my watch goes off for texts and calls
No. I don't have any Apple products and a Fit Bit would die of boredom if attached to my body considering I ass sit for about 18 hours a day. LOL
DH has a fitbit type watch that alerts him to his texts etc though so I know what you mean

Not rude.
People have all different schedules and what's convenient for one person is not for others. When it comes to texting, there is really no time that is off limits IMO.
You can set your phone to DND during certain hours at night. Or better yet, just set that text group to DND. I do that with numerous text chats.

The only appropriate text or call at that hour would be if someone was seriously ill and needed help, or that someone died.
I would be seriously pissed if someone sent me a text that early in the morning, also late at night.
Who is texting you if there is an emergency? I would imagine almost anyone would pick up the phone and call. I can't imagine finding out someone I was close to died over text.
I've never received a text like that, but know of some who have.

On the off chance that someone decides to text me about an emergency over night, I will take the good night's sleep with my phone on silent and deal with it in the morning. I'm not a doctor or emergency responder so I am imagining there isn't anything I could really do to help anyway. If you really need me, pick up the phone and call.

Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
An old boss of mine would email at 4:30 in the morning, and like an idiot I would read it and then I'd be anxious and couldnt go back to sleep. It was then that I learned the "do not disturb" function on my phone -- phone is in that realm from about 11-7 -- and if somebody calls me more than once it will ring, or certain people or texts can come through. Otherwise I dont hear a thing. I figure I'm allowed 8 hours to myself without interruption ....

Re: Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
I don't really pay any attention when I am texting someone. I usually will text as soon as I am thinking of something I have to tell them so I don't forget. Honestly, if you don't want to be disturbed by texts or calls too late or too early, silence your phone.
ETA - I silence my own phone every night before I go to bed. I really wouldn't be remotely bothered if someone texted me at all hours of the night, it won't disturb me at all.

I agree. I just answer messages when I see them. When I wake up, I usually have at least a few text messages that I got at some point overnight.

Very rude. Many people cannot silence their phones at night in the event of an emergency text from their child, spouse at work(night shifts!!) or whatever urgency that may come up. This should be respected in group texts situations where you don’t know everyone’s business.

This too. In my old job I would have to be manager on call one week every month and had to be available 24/7 should something come up. So silencing it wasn't an option when I slept. Also when DH worked midnights I liked to keep the phone on God forbid something happened.
People can learn to not just send out texts whenever a thought pops in their mind . Common courtesy. Something that has been lost in this day and age of cell phones surgically attached to everyone's hands

Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
My general rule of thumb, weekdays I will not text before 7 AM, weekends before 9 AM. I rarely text anyone after 9:30 PM. I put my phone on silent at night, but I know not everyone can do that. What I do- if I think of something I need to tell someone, but I am worried I will forget- and it is an off time, I type it out anyway, but don't press the send button. That's my reminder to send it at a more appropriate time.

But we live in a digital age and the problem is who dictates what the correct or standard hours are? If someone works nights, maybe 10am would be rude for them. 5am is not the middle of night. My DH day begins at 5am, so texting and/or communication starts at 5am for him. Mine is 6:30 - 7ish.
I just think it/s hard to say what is rude or not for something like this. Everyone operates differently and if you create a group text, then maybe the better option is let the group know when you would like them to text. Now if they blatantly don't listen then it's rude.
At the end of day, the solution to this is to communicate. If someone text you at 6am and you don't like it, tell them. Problem solved. I feel like people create this standard according to their lifestyle and then if you don't follow it, you're automatically labeled as rude.
ETA: OP does your DH have an iPhone? If so he can silence that group text. I do it with my family group text during work because they are out of control sometimes.

Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
I don’t think she realizes early texting is an issue just like many people do not realize that late texting can also be an issue.
I go to bed around 9 and sometimes wake up to 30+ texts from 9:30-11:30. I have my phone on do not disturb so it’s a nonissue. I read them when I wake up at 4:15. If they’re from my siblings, I’ll respond immediately but they all work weird hours (nurse, cops, mom of 3 children who don’t sleep - lol). Anyone else, I wait until after 7. Like a PP said though I usually forget to respond and only remember the next morning when it is again too early to text them.

Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
Ruder than rude. Unless you know for a fact someone wants to be texted at that time. The "rule" is/was no calls before 9am or after 9pm, obviously not for close family/friends ...people you actually know. The problem is the millennials were never taught and/or don't care about etiquette. Only text me at 5am if your dying, and if that is the case, you should really call 911 as I won't be able to help you, lol.

I don't think it's rude. Put your phone on silent or don't put it next to your bed. I do the most texting between 6 am and 7 am lol. If you text me after 9 pm though, that's a different story lol.

I think that was the "rule" about 40 years ago when we all just had one phone hanging on the wall and the ring would wake everyone up. I think that "rule" went out the window as soon as we started getting our blackberry's!

Opinion: Is it rude to answer a text message at 5:10am?
I go to bed early and typically will get texts late at night after I fall asleep, but my phone is on silent so I don't hear it. I will typically reply at like 6am when i'm awake and I don't think twice about it. My feeling is that if you don't want your phone to go off, turn it off or put it on silent
IMO, texts are different than phone calls. I would be pissed if my house phone rang late at night or early in the AM

Lol. That rule isn’t event a thing and I’m not a millennial. If anything millennials usually get into the office at 10am, so I doubt they are texting at 5am.

I don't think it's rude. I sleep like the dead though so it would never wake me up. I text people all the time. When something pops into my head that needs to be said and I'm going to forget if I don't do it right then, I send it.
